Wave Scales Pg. 28 Seismic waves Pg. 29

3 Seismic Waves Pg. 29 Seismology is the study of earthquakes.
Seismograph- instrument that records seismic waves.

4 Seismic Waves 1. P waves- Fastest waves, first to be detected.
Body waves-travel through the earth’s interior. 1. P waves- Fastest waves, first to be detected. Move back and forth parallel to the motion of the wave. Move through solids, liquids and gases.

5 2. S waves - Second fastest
Move perpendicular to motion of wave. Move only through solids

6 Surface waves-travel along the earth’s surface.
Slowest moving waves Cause the most damage during earthquakes 1.Love(L) waves move rock up and down and side to side.

7 2. Rayleigh waves - move with a rolling motion(like a typical wave)

8 Shadow zone – area on Earth’s surface where no seismic waves from a particular earthquake can be detected.

9 Measuring Earthquakes
Magnitude- strength of an earthquake. Richter scale Intensity-how much damage an earthquake causes. Mercalli scale
