Europe began exploring in Asia during the 1600s Started by Portugal looking for a way around Africa Went looking for spices, gold, and other raw materials

4 Portugal Colonies 1. As a result of looking for all-water route to Asia, Portugal started plantation colonies in Brazil for sugarcane 2. Trading post colonies in West Africa and Asia Color your map!!

5 Differences between Asia and the Americas
Europeans found advanced, and powerful nations in Asia Difference - Americas had small tribes scattered Europeans had to treat Asians as “equals” to trade Difference - Native Americans treated bad, Asians good

6 Differences between Asia and the Americas
Trade benefited Europe and Asia, not just Europe as in the Americas. Difference – New World colonies had to sell their raw materials to and buy things from the home nation without a choice

Europeans started trading posts/cities along the coast in many nations - first were in India Europeans Could not go too far inland In the Americas Europeans took over everything

Trade post cities eventually, opened Asian markets and society to Europe Asian nations were isolationist for centuries Isolationism – “leave me alone” – a nation wants nothing to do with the outside world. Japan and some others pushed out the Europeans because they feared spread of Christianity

9 European impact on Asia
B. Most Europeans are Christian so they sent missionaries to convert the Asians Took centuries to get converts - Not much of an impact until the 1800s Francis Xavier – missionary to Japan
