2 A brief history In Cuba the VLIR project promotes the improvement of the education in a network of universities One of the VLIR’s subprojects is ELINF, which supports VLIR’s goals by providing software tools and good practices

3 A brief history The ELINF subproject has an ecosystem of applications composed by integrated library systems, digital repositories, virtual learning environments and research information systems There is a need of Authority Control for the ELINF’s applications ecosystem

4 AUCTORITAS’ goals To provide Authority Control services for ELINF’s applications ecosystem To reuse as much as possible existing data sources for Authority Control

5 Linked Open Data (LOD) principles
Use Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) to uniquely identify data Use HTTP so that people, web agents and data mining tools can access and refer to data A URI has to refer to usable information that can be provided with RDF and queried with SPARQL Links to other RDF resources should be established

6 AUCTORITAS’ Authority Control
Uses URIs according to LOD principles to identify authors and controlled terms The data is shared through REST-based web services

7 AUCTORITAS’ data sets Library of Congress Authority records structured using RDF Authority Control-related information shared by external applications Local Authority Control data stored in a relational database

8 AUCTORITAS’ semantic data access mechanism
Uses a mechanism for Ontology-based Data Access (OBDA) OBDA allows the semantic description of the data retrieval information needed by AUCTORITAS The OBDA mechanism allows AUCTORITAS to scale respecting to data sources

9 Conclusions The usage of LOD principles, specifically URIs, allows the Authority Control in the ELINF applications ecosystem The OBDA mechanism allows AUCTORITAS to scale respecting to data sources The OBDA paradigm was extended to theoretically any kind of data storage software that allows to retrieve data using a syntactical query
