4 Phonics terminology Blending - Recognising the letter sounds in a written word and merging or synthesising them Segmenting - Identifying the individual sounds in a word and writing them down CVC words – a word made up of a consonant, vowel and then a consonant, e.g. cat CVCC/CCVC words – words containing adjacent consonants, e.g. lamp or frog Tricky words – a word which can not be blended and only learnt by sight

5 Phonics terminology Phoneme – the smallest unit of sound in a word
Grapheme - A way of writing down a phoneme. Graphemes can be made up from 1 letter e.g. p, 2 letters e.g. sh, 3 letters e.g. igh or 4 letters e.g ough. Digraph - A grapheme containing two letters that makes just one sound, e.g. oa Trigraph - A grapheme containing three letters that makes just one sound, e.g. igh Split digraph - A digraph in which the two letters are not adjacent, e.g. a-e in ‘cake’

9 Letters and Sounds – Phase 4
Consolidate knowledge of graphemes Read words with adjacent consonants (CVCC/CCVC) Spell words with adjacent consonants Tricky words – reading and spelling Reading/writing sentences

10 Letters and Sounds – Phase 5
New graphemes and alternative pronunciations of graphemes (e.g. ai, ay, a-e) Spell words using appropriate graphemes Tricky words – reading and spelling Read and spell two and three syllable words (e.g fantastic) Read and write sentences

11 Letters and Sounds – Phase 6 Year 2 curriculum
Past and present tenses Suffixes – ed, ing, ful, less Prefixes – un, dis Compound words (e.g. football) Singular and plural

12 Reading - curriculum Curriculum split up into:
Word reading – decoding the text, applying phonics, building up fluency and confidence Comprehension – discussing a wide range of genres, discussing word meanings, making inferences, making predictions, retelling and checking it makes sense. Comprehension just as important as word reading! Variety of genres – fiction, non-fiction and poetry End of year expectations Reading colours

13 Guided Reading Daily guided reading session usually 9:00-9:30
1 read with teacher/TA, 2nd read or follow up Children may read up onto next colour Rotation of independent activities Year 1 from October half term Year 2 from September

14 Bug Club New online reading resource
Children will access e-books of the colour they are reading on at school Books with focuses – tricky words/sounds Comprehension questions Teachers monitor access and responses Logins will be sent home Information letter

15 Writing – curriculum Curriculum split into 4 areas:
Spelling - spelling words using phonics, spelling tricky words, using prefixes and suffixes, spelling contracted words (I’ll, I’m) Handwriting - forming letters correctly, beginning to join Composition – writing for different purposes, saying out loud what they are going to write, re-reading their writing to check it makes sense Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation – capital letters, finger spaces, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, adjectives, past/present tense, conjunctions Curriculum - more focused on spelling, grammar and punctuation End of year expectations

16 Handwriting Scheme of work – PenPals Letters in 4 ‘families’:
Curly caterpillars – c, a, d, o, s, g, q, e, f Zigzag monsters – z, v, w, x Long legged giraffes – l, I, t, u, j, y One armed robots – r, b, n, h, m, k, p Also covers number formation and capital letters for all families Year 1 start to join clusters of letters together Year 2 build on this and join most letters
