3 Justification for Joint Interventions
Greater knowledge of risk factors in target groups. TB-control interventions should be part of the comprehensive care provided to people living with HIV/AIDS. Prevent TB from developing. Diagnose TB and treat it early. Development of joint strategies that explore synergies and program strengths. Community-mobilization strategies. Observed treatment strategies (DOTS). 5 General Objective To speed up an effective joint response from TB and HIV/AIDS Programs to the tuberculosis epidemic associated with HIV in the Americas, by facilitating information exchange and experiences among Programs. Workshop on TB/HIV Co-Infection, San Pedro Sula, Honduras, August 2003

6 Specific Objectives To present the final version of the documents, Building Blocks: Comprehensive-Care Guide for People Living with TB/HIV Co-Infection in Latin America and the Caribbean; and to receive feedback on it. To discuss the development of policies on TB/HIV at the national and Regional levels. To evaluate and make recommendations on collaboration strategies between TB Programs and HIV/AIDS Programs, at the country level. 7 Expected Results To have reviewed, improved and approved the proposed final version of the document Building Blocks: Comprehensive-Care Guide for People Living with TB/HIV Co-Infection in Latin America and the Caribbean. To have discussed proposals for Regional adaptation of the document Guidelines for Implementing Collaborative TB and HIV Programme Activities (WHO/ CDS/ TB/ ), with a view to future implementation.
