7 Themes Main theme I noticed in The Great Gatsby and This Side of Paradise was that the main characters were never satisfied with their lives. Wrote a lot about mutability or loss/aspirational idealism He defined the American character Created the flapper, women were always beautiful Sharp social insight and breathtaking lyricism Clear, lyrical, colorful, witty style evoked emotions with the time and place Very descriptive, explained theories of his own through his characters

8 Connections This Side of Paradise was partly autobiographical
All characters in books went to Princeton, had trouble with career/money, drinking problems, went to war, and had marriage and social troubles Protagonists social troubles were not a result of being Irish or Catholic like his troubles were In Tender is the Night, protagonist’s wife was a schizophrenic also Once said, “Sometimes I don’t know whether Zelda and I are real or whether we are characters in one of my novels.”

9 Death Alcoholic since college, wrote sober
When stressed about writing, drinking got worse Had 2 heart attacks in 1940 After 1st one, Doctor told him to avoid strenuous exertion Moved to 1st floor in apartment building Had 2nd one on December 20 Died the next day Few attended his funeral May have had tuberculosis-hemorrhage found Also could have been esophageal varices-enlarged veins in esophagus from alcohol In the middle of writing The Love of the Last Tycoon Published later as The Last Tycoon Died thinking he was a failure

10 Success This Side of Paradise became famous overnight
Got his fame and financial success F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Awards was named after him Won two O. Henry Awards
