2 F. Scott Fitzgerald His father, Edward, was from Maryland. His mother, Mary, was the daughter of an Irish immigrant. Princeton Class of 1917. More interested in writing than his studies.

3 F. Scott Fitzgerald Joined army in 1917. Stationed in Montgomery, Alabama in June, 1918.

4 F. Scott Fitzgerald Met celebrated debutant Zelda Sayre. WWI ended, moved to New York City to seek his fortune.

5 F. Scott Fitzgerald Resubmitted This Side of Paradise, a quest novel set in Princeton. Began writing short stories for magazines.

6 F. Scott Fitzgerald Zelda broke their engagement. Dejected, he returned to St. Paul and began to revise first novel.

7 F. Scott Fitzgerald Fitzgerald became an overnight sensation with the publication of This Side of Paradise. Married Zelda one week later.

8 F. Scott Fitzgerald The young celebrities lived the high life overseas. Fitzgerald’s playboy image damaged his credibility.

12 F. Scott Fitzgerald His reputation as a drinker inspired the myth that he was an irresponsible writer; but he actually paid great attention to detail and went through layers of drafts. Fitzgerald’s clear, lyrical, colorful, witty style evoked the emotions associated with time and place.

15 Zelda’s behavior becomes more erratic – at the age of 29 she studies to become a ballerina. Zelda suffers her first breakdown in April, 1930. Zelda’s novel, Save Me the Waltz, causes friction.

16 Tender Is the Night, examines the deterioration of Dick Diver, a brilliant American psychiatrist, during the course of his marriage to a wealthy mental patient.

17 F. Scott Fitzgerald Fitz moved to Hollywood in 1937 to try screenwriting. He paid off most of his debts. Died of a heart attack on Dec. 21, 1940, at the age of 44. Zelda died in a hospital fire in 1948.

18 F. Scott Fitzgerald F. Scott Fitzgerald died believing himself a failure. The obituaries were condescending, and he seemed destined for literary obscurity. However, a revival of his work occurred and by 1960 he had achieved a secure place among America’s enduring writers.
