1 Physical Features of Canada

2 I can find the major physical features of Canada
What do we need to be able to do? Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: the St. Lawrence River, Hudson Bay, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, the Great Lakes, Canadian Shield, and Rocky Mountains. Describe the characteristics of each physical feature

3 Where is Canada? Describe Canada’s location on the world map.
Describe Canada’s location in relation to the United States.

4 Where are the major physical features of Canada located?
Today, we are going to not only locate but describe characteristics as well of these features: Great Lakes St. Lawrence River & Seaway Hudson Bay Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Canadian Shield Rocky Mountains

5 Great Lakes form part of the border with the United States
Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario are split between the United States and Canada. Lake Michigan is only in the U.S. One of world’s busiest shipping areas Most of Canada’s population live in this region “industrial heartland” (factories = jobs)

6 Great Lakes Great Lakes

7 St. Lawrence River & Seaway
Connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean Important to Canada’s history because it allowed explorers to travel into North America by water Important natural resource – water and trade route (jobs); many cities in Eastern Canada Closed from November to April

8 St. Lawrence River & Seaway

9 Hudson Bay A gulf in east-central Canada
Connected to Atlantic and Arctic Oceans Grains from Alberta and Saskatchewan is shipped from Hudson Bay, to Atlantic, to rest of the world Only navigable from July to October Hudson Bay

10 Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is on Canada’s east coast
It is the second largest ocean. Most heavily traveled ocean. Major shipping route to Europe and Africa Atlantic Ocean

11 Pacific Ocean The Pacific Ocean is on Canada’s west coast.
Largest and deepest ocean Covers 1/3 of the earth’s surface Major shipping route to Asia Pacific Ocean

12 Canadian Shield covers a large part of eastern and central Canada in a horseshoe shape It has ancient rock just below and sometimes sticking out of the soil The area is known for its thin, rocky soil and rough, rolling landscape. This region has many lakes and rivers and is rich in minerals. Major source of timber, minerals, and water

15 Rocky Mountains Stretch over 2,000 miles from British Colombia in Canada to New Mexico in the United States (Western Canada) Mount Robson is the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies at nearly 13,000 feet Mining is biggest industry, followed by logging Sparsely populated and few cities

16 Rocky Mountains Rocky Mountains

17 Now, it’s your turn! Look at the description of each item.
Make sure you know where the item is located in Canada. Draw an illustration to help you remember important characteristics of the physical feature. YOU WILL NEED THIS PAPER (NOTES) FOR AN ASSIGNMENT NEXT WEEK!!!!! And yes It’s for a grade!
