¶ “ ‘Tinanggap ninyong walang bayad, ibigay ninyong walang bayad’ ” (Mateo 10:8). Sinasabi nito ang lahat.

The Least of These Lesson 3, July 20 Sabbath: A Day of Freedom Ang Sabbath: Isang Araw ng Kalayaan

7 Sabbath: A Day of Freedom
Key Text Mark 2:27 nkjv “AND HE SAID to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath’.” Susing Talata.

8 Sabbath: A Day of Freedom
Initial Words GOD CREATED THE Sabbath as the final act of the Creation week As Jesus said, the seventh-day Sabbath was created for all humanity. When we truly “remember the Sabbath day,” it will change us every day of the week, and—as Jesus demonstrated—it can be a means of blessing others, as well. Panimulang Salita.

9 1. Reasons for Sabbath (Exodus 20:11, Deuteronomy 5:15)
Sabbath: A Day of Freedom Quick Look 1. Reasons for Sabbath (Exodus 20:11, Deuteronomy 5:15) 2. A Day of Equality and Healing (Exodus 20:10, Matthew 12:10-13) 3. The Seventh Year Sabbath (Leviticus 25:2-5) 1. Mga Dahilan para sa Sabbath (Exodo 20:11, Deuteronomio 5:15) 2. Isang Araw ng Pagkakapantay-pantay at Pagpapagaling (Exodo 20:10, Matthew 12:10-13) 3. Ang Pampitong Taong Sabbath (Leviticus 25:2-5)

10 Exodus 20:11, Deuteronomy 5:15 nkjv
Sabbath: A Day of Freedom 1. Reasons for Sabbath Exodus 20:11, Deuteronomy 5:15 nkjv “FOR IN SIX days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day....” “And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out...therefore...God com-manded you to keep the Sabbath day.” 1.

11 1. Reasons for Sabbath Manna Enough CONTINUING FOR THE full 40 years of their wilderness wanderings, this rhythm of life, visible evidence of God’s provision and practiced unselfishness, should have become part of the culture of Israelite society. It came in the form of manna, a food that appeared each morning on the ground around the Israelites’ camp.

12 1. Reasons for Sabbath Manna Enough The lesson for the Israelites, and us, was that God has provided sufficiently for His people and His creation. If we take only what we need and are prepared to share our excess with others, all will be cared for and provided for. Taking only enough for the day required the people to trust that there would be more the following day.

13 Reasons for Sabbath Reminder of the Creator and Redeemer Remembering is an important part of the relationship that God seeks to reestablish with His people, a relationship centered on the fact that God is our Creator and Redeemer. Both roles appear in the two versions of the fourth commandment and are thus linked closely with Sabbath and its practice.

14 God is gracious to us; therefore, we need to be gracious to others.
Reasons for Sabbath Reminder of the Creator and Redeemer By keeping the Sabbath as a way of remembering and celebrating both our creation and redemption, we can continue to grow in our relationship, not only with the Lord but with those around us. God is gracious to us; therefore, we need to be gracious to others.

15 Sabbath: A Day of Freedom
2. A Day of Equality and Healing Exodus 20:10 nkjv “[B]UT THE SEVENTH day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.” 2.

16 2. A Day of Equality and Healing
The commandment has a special focus on urging that the Sabbath is a day to be enjoyed by everyone. In the light of the Sabbath, we are all equal. If you are an employer during the week, you have no authority to make your employees work on Sabbath. And that’s because God gave them, too, a day of rest.

17 2. A Day of Equality and Healing
If you are an employee—or even a slave—for the rest of your days, the Sabbath reminds you that you are equally created and redeemed by God, and God invites you to celebrate this in ways other than your usual duties. Even those outside the Sabbath-keeping people—“any foreigner”—should benefit from the Sabbath.

18 And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other”
2. A Day of Equality and Healing A Day of Healing “And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’.... ‘It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.’ Then He said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other” (Matthew 12:10-13 NKJV).

19 2. A Day of Equality and Healing
A Day of Healing “[T]he Sabbath was dedicated to rest and religious worship. All secular employment was to be suspended, but works of mercy and benevolence were in accordance with the purpose of the Lord.... To relieve the afflicted, to comfort the sorrowing, is a labor of love that does honor to God’s holy day.”—Welfare Ministry 77.

20 for it is a year of rest for the land.
Sabbath: A Day of Freedom 3. The Seventh Year Sabbath Leviticus 25:2-5 nkjv “ ‘ [I]N THE SEVENTH year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land.... You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. What grows of its own accord of your harvest you shall not reap, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine, for it is a year of rest for the land. 3.

21 3. The Seventh Year Sabbath
Rest for the Land THE SABBATH PRINCIPLE was not just about a day each week. It also included a special rest each seventh year, culminating in the year of jubilee after seven sets of seven years, meaning each 50th year. The Sabbath year allowed the farm-land to lie fallow for the year. The wisdom of this as an agricultural practice has been recognized widely.

22 3. The Seventh Year Sabbath
Rest for the Slave The seventh year also was significant for slaves (see Exod. 21:1–11). In the event that any of the Israelites became so indebted as to sell themselves into slavery, they were to be freed in the seventh year. Similarly, outstanding debts were to be canceled at the end of the seventh year (see Deut. 15:1–11).

23 Sabbath: A Day of Freedom
3. The Seventh Year Sabbath Not planting crops was an act of trust that God would provide enough in the previous year and from what the ground produced by itself in the Sabbath year. To release slaves and cancel debts was an act of mercy but also an act of trust in the power of God to provide for our needs. The people didn’t have to oppress others in order to provide for themselves.

24 The necessities of life must be attended to, the sick must be cared
Sabbath: A Day of Freedom Final Words “JESUS STATED TO them that the work of relieving the afflicted was in harmony with the Sabbath law. ... The necessities of life must be attended to, the sick must be cared for, the wants of the needy must be supplied. He will not be held guiltless who neglects to relieve suffering on the Sabbath.”—The Desire of Ages 206, 207. Huling Pananalita.
