Evangelism and Witnessing Lesson 3, April 21 Evangelism and Witnessing Lesson 3, April 21 Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism and Witnessing

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing Key Text Ephesians 4:11, 12 NKJV “A ND HE HIMSELF gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing Initial Words {193} IT IS UNFORTUNATE that many church members do not take advantage of the gifts they have been given. Sometimes the fault lies with the members themselves. Sometimes more could be done to encourage members to discover their gifts and then use them under the direction of the Holy Spirit. What a waste.

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing Quick Look 1. The Spirit and His Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) 2. Recipients of His Gifts (1 Peter 4:10) 3. Gifts and Responsibility (Romans 12:4, 6)

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing 1. The Spirit and His Gifts 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NKJV “NOW THERE ARE diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. … But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. … But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

1.The Spirit and His Gifts Crucial to Church Life {195} I T IS SIGNIFICANT that the Holy Spirit is the one who calls us to minister for God. Just before Jesus left the earth, He promised that the Holy Spirit would come to be our Helper. Part of the Spirit’s work is to equip us to spread the gospel.

1.The Spirit and His Gifts Crucial to Church Life {195} vital to salvation When we understand why the Spirit gives spiritual gifts, we see how vital they are to the salvation of those we are to reach for Christ. Although we may designate some gifts as important or special, in reality all gifts are crucial to the life and mission of the church.

1.The Spirit and His Gifts Other Gifts {197} Though not all gifts are overtly evangelistic, if ministered within the church body they will have varying degrees of impact upon the church’s evangelistic mission. The deacons were contributing to the overall evangelistic program by freeing up the disciples to be engaged full time in evangelism and preaching.

1.The Spirit and His Gifts Other Gifts {197} administration leadership hospitality pastoral ministry service New converts were also brought into fellowship and cared for. Therefore, spiritual gifts in the areas of adminis- tration, leadership, hospitality, pastoral ministry, and service would be among those present. An example of exercising spiritual gifts to benefit the whole church through supporting the evangelistic ministry of others.

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing 2. Recipients of His Gifts 1 Peter 4:10 NKJV “A S EACH ONE has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

2. Recipients of His Gifts The Believers {194} P EOPLE CAN EXERCISE a spiritual gift under the leadership of the Holy Spirit without formally discovering and naming that gift. Not only does the Holy Spirit distribute spiritual gifts among believers, He empowers us to use our gifts.

2. Recipients of His Gifts The Believers {194} None of the Bible passages that list spiritual gifts are identical. This suggests that the lists of gifts given are not complete; that is, there might be other gifts as well that could be added to the list.

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing 3. Gifts and Responsibility Romans 12:4, 6 NKJV “F OR AS WE have many members in the body, but all members do not have the same function. Having them gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them….”

3. Gifts and Responsibility Discovering Our Gifts {196} F ILL OUT AN inventory, apply a formula, and your gift is discovered. An appropriate spiritual gifts seminar is perhaps the easiest way to begin to discover your spiritual gifts. Affirmation of fellow believers. Results of a trial period in a particular missionary field.

3. Gifts and Responsibility Discovering Our Gifts {198} Spiritual gifts are not discovered just to satisfy our curiosity but rather to indicate that which the Lord would have us do and to show where we fit into the church body. It is our responsibility to seek the will of God and to work in harmony with that which the Spirit reveals.

3. Gifts and Responsibility Discovering Our Gifts {196} We have a responsibility to maintain the unity of the church. If we are Spirit-led, there will be the desired unity. The Spirit directs individuals, and He directs the church. The direction He gives to one member, He gives to the whole church. The Spirit does not lead individuals away from the body.

Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism, Witnessing Final Words {199} “GOD HAS SET in the church different gifts. These are precious in their proper places, and all may act a part in the work of preparing a people for Christ’s soon coming.” —Gospel Workers 481 “All men do not receive the same gifts, but to every servant of the Master some gift of the Spirit is promised.” —Christ’s Object Lessons 327
