1 Program for Instructor Enrichment (PIE) Community Update
January 08, , 10:15 – 11:15, Gaskins Leslie Building CPR and Practice lab

2 Community Training Center
Roslyn Linton, RN CTC Coordinator Penny Purvis, CTC Instructor Erica Poteat, CTC Program Assistant

3 Purpose of PIE To convey information about programmatic updates from the American Heart Association and programmatic and process changes in the Community Training Center. To allow time for instructors to complete their renewal process including demonstration of skills, written test, and completion of paperwork for instructor files. Target Audience: AHA Life Support Instructors aligned with the Community Training Center at Vidant Medical Center. Instructors are required to attend one PIE meeting each calendar year. Calendar year begins in January and ends in December. Two will be offered for community instructors.

4 AHA Policy Update as of 2015 Course size for BLS course is flexible. The course is designed for a ratio of three students to one manikin with no more than two manikins to one instructor. With this ratio, 1 instructor observes 2 students during video led manikin practice. The team approach must be utilized during every HeartCode or Standard BLS class at Vidant Medical Center. This prohibits the use of one person rosters. Specified Life Saving Training for employees by job descriptions determine the type of class for which employees register. These employees may enroll for any CTC class. CTC classes are in the learn center. Vidant Health System and VMC employ the use of HeartCode BLS. There are no longer any live classes for BLS. (AHA BLS Instructor Manual, 2016, Part 1 Preparing section, Instructor to Student Ratio, pg. 4)

5 Policy Update By January 31, 2019, the AHA will require the use of an instrumented directive feedback device or manikin in all AHA courses that teach the skills of adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Specifically, an instrumented directive feedback device or manikin is one that, at a minimum, provides audio or visual (or both) feedback on the rate and depth of compressions during training.

6 Challenge Option, The AHA no longer offers a “challenge” option, where students may complete course testing requirements without participation in an AHA instructor-led training or blended–learning course. To demonstrate proficiency in knowledge and skills, all students must complete a provider course every two years to maintain their course completion card. Students who believe they have mastery of knowledge may wish to complete the blended-learning version of the provider course or, for ACLS and PALS Courses, attend an instructor led update version of the course. . of PAM updates on September 21, 2017, Pam page 20-21 Using the course DVDs is mandatory in classroom courses. Pg. 34 of PAM There is a live stream of the BLS course that may be employed. The CTC has not purchased this product at this time and will continue to use the video when required. The product will be available January 10, 2019.

All Basic Life Support Training at Vidant Medical Center and in the region is HeartCode. Employees are assigned the online portion prior to class. Employees bring completion certificate to class. Color of arm bands for DNR and partial DNR’s should be covered with students.

9 HeartSaver Employees in the role of transporter, social worker, nursing assistant, and mental health techs take HeartSaver CPR training. This is a live one and a half hour to two hour class. There is an agenda for this course to keep the class at the one and a half hour time frame. Bag masks are taught in this class at VMC because it is our policy to utilize bag masks during a code situation. No mouth to mouth is to be delivered. Color of arm bands for DNR and partial DNR’s should be covered with students. Please follow the agenda and video format when teaching. Do not take time to instruct separately from the instructions being given by video. It adds unnecessary time to the class.
