1 Welcome Y12 UCAS Information Evening
ADS Have explained apprenticeships and foundation – there will be another art foundation evening. Explain this is primarily UCAS evening.

The Charter Sixth Form 82% University 5-10% Art Foundation 5-10% Gap year, work, apprenticeship

3 Art Foundation A one year course which prepares students of Fine Art or Photography for degree study. An opportunity to explore a wider range of media and make informed decisions about their choice of degree course, as well as gain support in preparing a portfolio. Past students have completed Art Foundation courses at: Camberwell Art College, Central St. Martins, Kingston University, Leeds College of Art, Falmouth and Prince’s Drawing School

4 Apprenticeships – more on this later
Wide range of paid apprenticeships at various levels available for students post A-Level including professional sectors such as Accountancy and Law. Introduction of degree apprenticeships (limited subject range) Apply directly to companies so can also apply to UCAS Previous students have gained places on high level apprenticeship schemes at: Sky Sports Commerz Bank Ernst and Young Civil Service Large government push on apprenticeships No longer seen as poor alternative Highly competitive programmes offered by many large companies Debt free way of gaining qualifications Not suited to all as many still wish to have that academic student experience

5 Gap Year Students can apply for a deferred entry to start in 2021 or can choose to apply in UCAS 2020 An opportunity to work / travel / volunteer in relation to their chosen degree course Previous students have: Worked on charity projects in Mexico & Australia Completed an internship in the City Travelled Volunteered

6 Aims of this talk on UCAS
What is UCAS? How can you support your child with UCAS? What’s coming up at school? ADS

7 What is UCAS? A centralised organisation.
The application contains personal information, a personal statement and a teacher’s reference. Students choose 5 ‘choices’. ADS that coordinates all students’ online applications to university

8 How can you support your child with UCAS
How can you support your child with UCAS? Sit together and look at unifrog Do a quick demo

9 A search for History with predicted grades of AAB on unifrog
A range of entry requirements

10 For History BA A Level Universities A levels A*, A, A
Durham, Cambridge A levels A, A, A Oxford, LSE, UCL, King’s College, Exeter, Warwick, Leeds, Nottingham A, A, B Glasgow, Manchester, Lancaster, Sheffield, Nottingham, Southampton, Liverpool A, B, B Edinburgh, Bristol, Birmingham, Sussex, Cardiff B, B, B Kent, UEA, Swansea, Goldsmiths, Essex B,C,C Dundee, Plymouth, Northampton ADS – an example History BA; talk about other types of degrees

11 Variety between same subject degrees
History BA - Warwick (AAA) History BA - East Anglia (AAB) Choose between Renaissance and Modern or Modern stream If you select Renaissance and Modern stream you have to study Italian because you study in Venice for one term in the third year. Choose modules from medieval through to twentieth century. In the first year you have to study ‘established methodological approaches and theoretical concepts of historical enquiry in the ‘History, Controversy and Debate’ module.’

12 The Guardian league table
Rank 2019 Rank 2018 University Russell Group? 1 Cambridge Y 2 Oxford 3 St Andrews N 4 6 Loughborough 5 Durham Bath 7 Imperial College 8 Warwick 9 Lancaster 10 14 Leeds League tables are important but positions change frequently and year to year. Russell Group membership can sometimes indicate a university is good – but note that half of the top ten unis are not Russell Group

13 Your predicted grades are NOT your target or module grades.
Predicted A Level or BTEC grades form the basis of your University offers A University will make a conditional offer to your child. Your child may receive as many as 5 or as few as 0 offers. UCAS tariff points are used by some universities (around a third). Instead of asking for grades (e.g. BBC), a university may express the offer as 112 points. The more traditional universities are more likely to stipulate grades and not points. Also, universities may not, for example, consider BBB at A level to be the same as ABC at A level. Unconditional offers are becoming more frequent and should be considered very carefully. Your predicted grades are NOT your target or module grades. These will be made in September by your subject teacher based on End of Year exams. A Level grade BTEC grade UCAS points EPQ points AS points A* Distinction * 56 28 A Distinction 48 24 20 B 40 16 C Merit 32 12 D 10 E Pass 8 6 ADS Y12 AS grades have to be declared on UCAS AS grades will inform predicted grades Students will also have predicted grades from subject teachers One third of courses have a tariff

16 What should you and your child be doing now and in the summer?
Look together at prospectuses online, unifrog and league tables Go to 2 open days: Students should talk to their teacher about predicted grades – these will be confirmed in September once we have all AS and End of Year exam grades. Make informed ‘choices’ including both subject/location and a range of entry requirements.
