Pencil cases NOT compulsory (We write in pencil although pen licences may be awarded.) Check bags daily – children responsible for taking letters home

…and how you can support at home.

8 Reading Reading at home every day (varied diet of fiction, non-fiction, poetry) Books home every night and back every morning Children on the reading scheme will initially be supported to change their books (working towards independence) Please do continue to hear your child read. Crucially, talk about what they read, ask them questions about plot, characters and themes. Can they retrieve information in the text? (DERIC) Story CDs can be helpful.

9 Spelling List for the term (let us know if you do not have one)
Spelling is taught the one week and tested the next Practising spelling is an important part of the homework. Please support learning by continuing to discuss meaning and application at home. Tested weekly (some may be put into a sentence - dictation) Normally Wednesdays for all three classes *

11 Homework Spelling, reading and times tables (incl. division facts) form part of the homework. An additional piece of homework will be set once a week – usually alternating between English and Maths but can be something else. To be completed in books – presentation is important. If it is a sheet, please fold and glue in neatly. It will be set on a Friday for the following Friday. Weekly newsletter with details will be on the school website A brief word on marking homework…

12 The Fern Hill Notebook Acts as reading record – for child/parent/teacher We will sight and initial/stamp at least once a week Messages to teachers – child must show us If your child has been read with (individually) by a member of staff at school, this will be indicated. Keep neat and tidy Please support your child to remember to pack it in their bag everyday

School is for learning - both academically and socially Please support us in this at home too.

14 Trips and enrichment Autumn term – Thames Young Mariners (12th Sept) for outdoor and adventurous activities (team building) Spring term – The Natural History Museum trip (Thursday 24th January) for Geography topic on Rocks Summer 1st half – Gatton Park trip (date tbc) for Science topic on Plants and Rainbow Theatre (in school) interactive drama workshop on Romans Summer 2nd half – Chessington Zoo (date tbc) for Science topic on Animals
