11 Spelling Children will receive weekly spellings inline with their age related expectations. WAYS TO SUPPORT SPELLING AT HOME Practise the spelling strings/patterns – not just learn by rote. Play games – hangman, anagrams etc. Little and often Parents Information Sheet Mathematics at Ashdene We welcome a number of positive changes to maths which will be implemented this term with the aim of improving your child’s learning. Firstly, the maths target system has been amended to align with English. This will provide your child with clear targets to encourage them to take responsibility for their learning. All classes have a display of maths vocabulary which identifies key words and phrases required to make good progress in maths. These displays are designed to be interactive and support the concept which is currently being taught. Maths lessons now embed an investigative ‘using and applying’ approach throughout all mathematical learning. Pupils will be given the opportunity to pose their own questions, to make their own discoveries, communicate their findings to others and be able to determine their own methods. We aim for pupils to be engaged through exciting learning. At Ashdene, we recognise the importance of children having a secure grasp and rapid recall of their time tables. Ultimately, we want the children to know their times tables ‘off by heart’ by the end of Year Four, as outlined in the new Mathematics curriculum. During this term, a parent information sheet will be issued detailing the time tables learning targets for each year group.

12 Handwriting Within the new assessment system handwriting is as important as other aspects of writing. If children cannot write legibly and neatly they cannot meet their year group expectation. Implementing a handwriting scheme across the school to promote consistency throughout year groups. Expectation of handwriting across all subjects – not just English Teachers to decide when children are writing consistently neatly and can be issued a pen licence. Once the font is installed shall print a sheet demonstrating the script which can be distributed to parents.

13 Handwriting WAYS TO SUPPORT HANDWRITING AT HOME Handwriting books with guidelines can be issued if desired. Please see Miss Baldock if you would like some additional resources for handwriting. If handwriting is below the Year 6 standard we will provide extra support in school, and may ask for support at home. Once the font is installed shall print a sheet demonstrating the script which can be distributed to parents.
