6 Life After the 300

7 Chapter 5 Section 3 Athens remains as the elite and dominate city state. The Persian Wars- The Athenians dominate the Persians on the water and defeat King Xerxes at the battle of Marathon. Delian League- an alliance with Greek city states.

8 Athens under Pericles The time after Persian Wars was a golden age for Athens which became more democratic: it was called the ‘Age of Pericles’ after its wise and skillful leader. In response to the Athenians growth of power the Spartans create the Delian league.

9 The Peloponnesian War Sparta VS. the Athenians
Result of war. Sparta wins but does so with help of Persian navy. Athens loses its empire and its navy. But city is spared.

11 Greek Philosophers Socratic method is ‘cross questioning.’ Answer a question with a question. He writes no books. He is put on trial and charged with corrupting the youth. Drinks poisonous hemlock and dies. Plato a student of Socrates He resolves that rulers should be philosopher-kings. He founds the Academy. Plato’s main political principle is that government is a science and requires expert knowledge.
