1 16.1 Charge and Electric Circuits

2 Positive and Negative Charges
All matter has electrical properties because it is made of protons and electrons.

3 Positive and Negative Charges
Different charges attract Like charges repel Static electricity: less than one millionth of a coulomb The unit of charge is the coulomb (abbreviated C).

4 Static Electricity Static electricity is caused by an imbalance in positive or negative charges on an object Static electricity: less than one millionth of a coulomb

5 Electric Current Electricity: the flow of electric current
Electric current: the flow of electric charge (movement of electrons)

6 Electric Circuits Electric circuit: a complete path through which electricity travels Wires in electric circuits are similar to pipes that carry water.

7 Electrical symbols are used to represent the components of a circuit.
Copy this down Circuit Diagrams Electrical symbols are used to represent the components of a circuit.

8 Open and Closed Circuits
Current only flows when there is a complete and unbroken path, or a closed circuit – switch is “on” If switch is “off”, you create an open circuit by breaking the path

9 Open and Closed Circuits
Current leaves the positive end of the battery and returns to the negative end.

10 Open and Closed Circuits
Which devices (A, B, C, D) will be on when… a. Switch 3 is open, and all other switches are closed. b. Switch 2 is open, and all other switches are closed. c. Switch 4 is open, and all other switches are closed.

11 Open and Closed Circuits

12 Open and Closed Circuits
Which devices (A, B, C, D) will be on when… b. Switch 2 is open, and all other switches are closed.

13 Open and Closed Circuits
Which devices (A, B, C, D) will be on when… c. Switch 4 is open, and all other switches are closed.

14 Resistors Resistor: an electrical device that uses or controls the energy carried by an electric current
