3. Motivation Many installed AWS fail/stay online for a short time
“Lack of technical know-how to repair AWS whenever they are down. The equipment is usually purchased from abroad and our people are ignorant of repairs and replacements” Dr. Everline Komutunga, Agrometeorologist, NARO

4. Common Maintenance Issues
Faulty components: Sensors easily get damaged particularly the rain gauges
Power problems: Batteries neither readily available nor easily replaceable. This is attributed to the component selection which doesn’t take into consideration local content.
Vandalism
Communication problems
High cost of replacing damaged components

5. Current Maintenance Procedures
Scheduled maintenance visits to the stations?
In response to a report from the observer?

6. Recommendations
Build capacity through a training course covering common maintenance issues
Enagage the core RC3 team upto 1 year before the project end to stabilise
Hand-over to UNMA to maintain from 1-year to project closing onwards
Is outsourcing a viable option? Who would be the players?
