3 The Internet A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. A vast network of networked computers covering the whole world

5 The Web A multimedia based collection of information, services, and web sites supported by the Internet Note: Prior to the discovery of the Web, the Internet was all text

6 The Web… Web browser Software that allows the user to surf the web e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator Web site A specific location on the web that can be visited electronically to search for info or request products Web page A specific portion of a web site that deals with a certain topic

7 The Web… Web site address A unique name for the entire web site
Also known as a domain name Web page address A unique name for a web page within a web site Also called Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

8 Movement of Information on the Internet
Information moves from one computer to another following a communications protocol A communications protocol is a set of rules computers follow to transfer information

9 Communications Protocol
Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Basic communications protocol for the Internet to work Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http) Supports the movement of info over the web Hence, web site addresses start with http File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Allows the transfer of files from one computer to another

10 WWW WWW means World Wide Web
Collection of internet resources (such as FTP, telnet, Usenet), hyperlinked text, audio, and video files, and remote sites that can be accessed and searched by browsers based on standards such as HTTP and TCP/IP. Also called the web

12 Web 1 The first implementation of the web represents the Web 1.0, which, according to Berners-Lee, could be considered the “read-only web.” In other words, the early web allowed us to search for information and read it. There was very little in the way of user interaction or content contribution

13 Web 1.. Web 1.0 is a retronym referring to an early stage of the World Wide Web's evolution. According to Cormode, G. and Krishnamurthy, B. (2008): "content creators were few in Web 1.0 with the vast majority of users simply acting as consumers of content” Main characteristics – static pages, no interaction with users

16 Web 2.0 Web 2.0 describes World Wide Web sites that use technology beyond the static pages of earlier Web sites. A Web 2.0 site may allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to Web sites where people are limited to the passive viewing of content..[3]

17 Web 2.0… Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, folksonomies, video sharing sites, hosted services, Web applications, and mashups etc
