Warmup – 8/23 Solve the following equations for y: -6x + 2y = 18

Goal: I will be able to explain in words what a function is and identify and sketch the graphs of the seven parent functions we will study in Algebra 2.

What is a relation? A relation is simply a set of ordered pairs. The first elements in the ordered pairs (the x-values), form the domain. The second elements in the ordered pairs (the y-values), form the range.

Definition of a Function
A function is a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range.

What does that mean? Domain Range Input Output Independent Variable Dependent Variable X-Values Y-Values

How does a function work?

How does a function work?
Input Output Button 1 Coke Button 2 Button 3 Sprite Button 4 Diet Coke Button 5 Mr. Pibb Button 6 Mellow Yellow Button 7 Caffeine Free Coke Button 8 Root Beer

Are the following relations functions?

On Your Whiteboard: Write two relations. One that is an example of a function and one that is not an example of a relation. Your example must be different than your neighbor.

Do the following graphs represent a function?

Exit Ticket: In your own words, explain how to determine if a relation is also a function. Be sure to include the terms domain and range in your description.
