1 Balance Animal Series Colored Pencil & Watercolor
ART II - MILITO

2 Create a series of 3 views of an animal with symmetrical, asymmetrical, & radial balance w/ colored pencil & watercolor. MAIN OBJECTIVE

3 Proportion Can deal with size relationships due to perspective
A principle of art referring to the relationship of scale or size of objects within a work of art Can deal with size relationships due to perspective Size changes depends on distance Could focus on the comparison of size between objects to show evenness Correct proportion is key to creating an accurate & realistic art piece

4 Balance A principle of art that refers to the stability of the visual weight of a work of art. Asymmetry: the object or image is different or heavier on one side, creates a sense of instability Symmetry: the object or image is the same on both sides, creates a sense of stability Radial Balance: the object or image is the same as it radiates out from a central point, creates a sense of stability

5 Asymmetrical The object or image is different or heavier on one side, creates a sense of instability Animals heads & tails are quite different when looked at from the side or positioned at angles Find a reference image posed with asymmetrical balance

6 Symmetrical The object or image is the same on both sides, creates a sense of stability Animals have bilateral symmetry when looking at them from the top & front Find a reference image posed with symmetrical balance

7 Radial Balance The object or image is the same as it radiates out from a central point, creates a sense of stability Some animals eyes have radial balance, but not all, so choose wisely Some animal’s bodies can be positioned to have radial balance Find a reference image posed with radial balance

8 Select Your Animal & Views
Think of different animals you like & feel you could draw Find reference images of them in many different views Side View / Profile Straight Foreword / Frontal Close Ups of Specific Features Choose views that clearly have a sense of the following types of balance. Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial

9 Paper / Layout Use watercolor paper Draw 3 boxes for your artwork
Dimensions should be between 4 & 8 inches in any direction & be proportionate to each other in some way Leave a ½ inch boarder all the way around each piece You will be mounting them & arranging them with a sense of balance later

10 Sketches Divide your paper into 4 sections
Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial Layout Divide your paper into 4 sections Sketch your 3 different animal views & colorize In the blank space draw your layout / how you will arrange your images when finished

11 Working Order | Remember to clean up each day
Complete all colored pencil drawings before moving on to watercolor Finish watercolor paintings individually (section by section, one by one, don’t jump around)

12 Underdrawings | Colored Pencil
Start your drawings off by LIGHTLY sketching main outlines Be sure to get the correct shape & PROPORTIONS before moving on Use COLORED PENCIL to create shapes, lines, texture, & undertones Finish all drawings before moving on

13 Colorizing | Watercolor
Colorize your works of art using WATERCOLOR or blend in using alcohol Dilute or saturate pigments to adjust intensity Mix colors for unique & more accurate colors Use different wet/ dry painting techniques to create different textures

14 Mounting the Artworks You will frame the 3 artworks with colored paper in a series The layout is up to you, but each piece should show a sense of BALANCE & PROPORTION

15 Artist Statement Use worksheet! Write full sentences, be specific, & use your art vocabulary. What animal did you choose & why? Describe each view of your animal & how it represents each type of balance What colors & textures did you use in your artwork? What did you create in pencil & what did you create in watercolor? How did you use proportion in this artwork?
