Beaker The primary function of a beaker is to hold and work with liquids.

Graduated Cylinder Graduated cylinders are designed to make accurate liquid volume measurements. Measured in Milliliters (mL) Come in many different sizes.

Reading a Graduated Cylinder
Place on flat surface like table or countertop. Eyes should be level with liquid. Liquid curves downward. This is called meniscus. Read the volume at the lowest point of the meniscus.

How is it Divided? All graduated cylinders are divided using a different scale. Marks between numbers represent numbers between those numbers. This is called scale. Determine the scale before attempting to measure.

Let’s Practice! 1 Scale: Volume: 14 mL

Let’s Practice! 5 Scale: Volume: 90 mL

Let’s Practice! 10 Scale: Volume: 250 mL

Let’s Practice! 1 Scale: Volume: 43 mL

Ruler Instrument used to measure distance.

Triple Beam Balance The function of a triple beam balance is to measure the mass of objects.

Practice! (Click on image for website)

Bunsen Burner The function of a bunsen burner is to heat substances.

Microscope Microscopes can magnify usually between 40 times to 1000 times, depending on the brand and model of the microscope used.

Microscope Slide The microscope slide is a flat piece of glass used for viewing objects under the microscope.

Cover Slip The cover glass is used with a microscope slide. The cover slip serves to flatten objects being viewed and also serves as a barrier between the object and the microscope's objective lens to keep the lens clean.

Flask The function of a flask is to hold and store liquids. Flasks are good for mixing substances with little or no spillage.

Hot Plate The function of a hotplate is obvious. Hotplates are used to heat substances.

Petri Dish A petri dish is a flat dish made of plastic or glass with a cover that is primarily used to grow bacteria.

Test Tube The function of a test tube is to hold a small experiment, which would be used to conduct an investigation.

Test Tube Holder The test tube holder obviously is designed to hold test tubes.

Thermometer The thermometer is an instrument used for determining temperature.

On a sticky note, write EITHER:
Exit Ticket On a sticky note, write EITHER: One thing you learned in class today One thing you’re still unsure about Place sticky note on the back board under the correct class period.
