1 1 Bell Work 2 History of Science
Table of Contents Beyond our World Activity # Title Bell Work History of Science Models of Solar system

2 Name three things you know about space.
Bell Question: Name three things you know about space.

3 History of Astronomy Name What did he do?
Can you think of any astronomers? Fill in the chart as we review the scientists. Name What did he do?

4 Aristotle 384 BC – 322 BC Contributed so much to science without technology Thought that the heavens were perfect spheres spinning around the Earth This view was widely accepted until the 1600s Why does this theory make sense?

5 Ptolemy Developed geocentric model Geo = Earth Centric = Center
Sun, Moon, and 5 planets revolved around the earth (geocentric view)

6 Nicolaus Copernicus Developed the heliocentric model Helio = Sun
Centric = Center The planets go around the SUN (heliocentric model)

7 Galileo Galilei 1564-1642 Considered the father of modern science
Created the telescope by improving the spyglass Used observations to agree that heliocentric model was correct Catholic Church put him on trial for heresy, and was put under house arrest for rest of his life

8 What is gravity? Gravity is how much one object pulls on another object All objects experience this pull. The bigger the object, the bigger the pull. Also, gravity is stronger when the objects are closer. You pull on the Earth and the Earth pulls on you. Since the Earth is much more massive, it’s pull is much stronger. Gravity is what keeps us on Earth and planets in orbit.

9 Cut out Timeline strips and glue them in the correct place on the timeline.
When you are finished, make sure you answer the question at the bottom.

10 Who developed the telescope?
