1 Today’s Agenda… Bellringer: Describe one energy transformation that has taken place around you today. How did you know it happened? Energy Transformation Worksheet Notes on Energy Transfer Quiz on Monday

2 Energy Transfer: Heat and Temperature
Study Pack #5

3 What do you know? True(A) or False(B)
The particles in matter are always moving The particles in matter have potential energy The warmer a substance is, the more energy its particles have Heat moves from cooler substances to warmer substances Thermal equilibrium means that both substances have the same temperature

4 Transformation and Transfer
Energy can be transformed or changed into another form Energy can also be transferred from one object to another Today we will talk about the transfer of thermal energy

5 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
Any material or object is made up of atoms or molecules Recall properties of solids, liquids, and gases The particles in materials are moving constantly

6 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
Because the particles are moving, they have kinetic energy. Thermal energy is a type of kinetic energy The faster the particles are moving, the more kinetic energy they have. Or the faster they move, the more thermal energy a substance has. Which has more kinetic energy? A. Solid B. Liquid C. Gas

7 Temperature and Kinetic Energy
Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. When an object’s temperature is higher, its atoms or molecules have more kinetic energy

8 Heat A transfer of thermal energy from one object to another due to a difference in temperature is called heat. Heat flows from warmer objects to cooler ones. Energy always flows from the warmer object to the cooler object For example, heat flows from a hot cup of coffee to your hand

9 Heat Heat will continue to flow to the cooler object until the two objects become the same temperature, this is called thermal equilibrium

10 What did you learn? True(A) or False(B)
The particles in matter are always moving The particles in matter have potential energy The warmer a substance is, the more energy its particles have Heat moves from cooler substances to warmer substances Thermal equilibrium means that both substances have the same temperature

11 More! BrainPop Review

12 Exit Slip Why does your hand get cold when you hold a block of ice?
