Who was put in charge of formally creating a document declaring the colonists’ independence? What is this document called?

Look at the Declaration of Independence Which section is the longest? Why do you think Thomas Jefferson focused on this part the most? Think about organization– why did Jefferson save “declaring independence” for the last few lines?

5 Four Parts of the Declaration of Independence
Preamble- introduction. Lists the reasons for writing the Declaration. Protection of Natural Rights- If a gov. doesn’t protect Natural Rights, then the people can reject that gov and form another gov! Grievances against the King: Lists of complaints about the king. Declaring Independence: The colonies are free and independent states!
