Why was the D.O.I so important in our path to independence? What did it do? TSWBAT compare/contrast the ideas of the DOI EQ: How did TJ start the DOI?

2 Objective: Students will be able to compare and contrast the key philosophies of the Declaration of Independence as evidenced by completed declaration with 80% accuracy Where does today’s objective fit into the unit learning goal for levels 2 and 3? 4 Writing Activity: You must address the King of England in a colonial petition including your grievances and desires for independence Use evidence and details from what you have learned to pack the petition with emotion. You can slam the King, you petition must include at least five complaints about the King or English rule Make is sound intelligent and be sure to make your emotions clear It must three parts: preamble, lists of complaints, and declaration of independence.

5 1. Vocabulary Thomas Paine- author who called KG3 a royal brute and wrote the influential pamphlet Common Sense Richard Henry Lee- introduced the Virginia resolution Resolution- a formal statement of opinion Preamble- beginning to the DOI Grievance-formal complaints

6 2. The Declaration of Independence
We must explain why we are breaking away with England! Brilliant piece of writing built on ideas from the Enlightenment Principle author was Thomas Jefferson. Explained why the colonists wanted to break away from British rule The declaration began with a preamble or an introduction It would change the world

7 3. Natural Rights The preamble discusses general ideas about society and government Jefferson states that all men are endowed with certain unalienable rights These statements were based on John Locke’s ideas about natural rights

8 4. List of Grievances The sec0nd section of the DOI
This section outlines how the King and Parliament violated the rights of the colonists They were written as complaints against the King DOI lists 27 of them! Examples of such included taxation without consent, depriving us of trial by jury, and sending officers to harass us Because he ignored our petitions he is considered, “unfit to be the ruler of a free people.”

9 5. Dissolving the Bonds After showing that the king had violated the rights of the colonists and establishing that people have the right to abolish an unjust government, the Declaration reaches a logical conclusion FREEDOM and independence from Britain The serious tone of the declaration meant that independence was a deeply felt step of the Patriots

10 6. What was the impact of the DOI?
On July 4th, 1776 the Congress approved the DOI. (this is why we celebrate July 4th!) The risk for those signing the document was great, they could be killed by the British. The DOI changed the nature of the revolution, made the war for freedom OFFICIAL The Patriots were no longer fighting for better treatment…they were fighting to create a NEW NATION! No turning back now…

11 What was the impact of the DOI?
The DOI is one of the world’s most lasting documents The idea that “all men are created equal” still inspires Americans and people from other nations In 1776, these words only applied to while, male property owners; but over the years Americans worked to expand natural rights to all Now there would be an independent nation of America

12 Summary In one paragraph at the bottom of your CORNELL notes summarize the impact of the Declaration of Independence. Why was it so significant? How did it change the world? Progress Chart: Complete your progress chart for objective C. If you are below a three…what could you have done to get higher on your chart? What aspects of this objective are you confused about?
