Healthy Living with Chronic Pain
Weeks 1x/week 10-18 Participants 2 peer Leaders The Healthy Living with Chronic Pain program is a Small group, Community-based workshop that meets for 2.5 hour long sessions, once a week, for 6 consecutive weeks Led by 2 trained PEER Leaders – (one or both of whom are non-health professionals with chronic pain themselves). It has a pre-set curriculum for Leaders and is very interactive and participatory for the attendees. Through the workshop, participants will share, listen, and help each other over the sessions. Everyone helps each other along the way. This workshop is For individuals with chronic pain or someone who lives with someone who has chronic pain (like a spouse, sister, caregiver). Chronic Pain may include many types of conditions from a variety of causes. The goal of this program is to give tools to help individuals manage their pain. A note on PEER leaders / *Peer centered learning – People do best when learning from people like themselves. Leaders of the program are “lay” people. Even if they are a health professional, we take off our hat at the door and come in as a person with personal experience dealing with chronic health problems.. What studies find is when profs lead a group participants will learn more, but if a peer leads, participants DO more. And the latter helps maintain long-term behavior change. Leaders help participants learn tools to increase their self-confidence in being able to manage their symptoms while learning how their pain affect their lives. There’s a social credibility to a peer guiding participants through information – where leaders & participants, learn and share throughout the program – this increases a persons belief that they can do it too. This also has a powerful impact where a person doesn’t feel so alone in their struggles or frustrations.

Why is HLCP needed? Pain affects more people than diabetes + heart disease + cancer combine Difficult to manage and isolating Affects mood, activities, sleep, ability to work, & enjoyment of life 2/3 felt pain reduced overall enjoyment of life >75% feel depressed 86% have difficulty sleeping Let’s talk about Why Healthy Living with Chronic Pain is a needed program First, let’s define Chronic Pain: it’s a discomfort that persists for 3-months or more and can be caused by many different factors – most notably chronic conditions. Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined (about 100 million Americans) and is one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care. Pain is a major component of many long-term health issues, and is emerging as a health concern on its own – impacting a person, their families, and society as a whole. Many struggle to find ways to manage their chronic pain. Since the most common treatment for CP is pain reliever medication, older adults have been increasingly prescribed medications, including opioids, to manage this condition. This can led to misuse and abuse – often unintendedly. While medications should be part of a treatment plan – a persons plan should also include a self-management program like HLwCP. Affects mood, activities, sleep, ability to work, & enjoyment of life 2/3 felt pain reduced overall enjoyment of life >75% feel depressed 86% have difficulty sleeping

Consequences of Chronic Pain
In the US, the total annual incremental cost of health care due to pain ranges from $560 billion to $635 billion Chronic pain is the most common cause of long-term disability The annual value of lost productivity ranged between $ billion Emotional and physical toll on individuals and families A few consequences of Chronic pain to mention are: In the US, the total annual incremental cost of health care due to pain ranges from $560 billion to $635 billion (in 2010) which combines the medical costs of pain care and the economic costs related to disability days and lost wages and productivity. Chronic pain is the most common cause of long-term disability The prevalence of pain has a tremendous impact on business, the annual value of lost productivity in 2010 dollars ranged between $297.4 billion to billion dollars. The value of lost productivity is based on three estimates: days of work missed, hours of work lost, and lower wages  As well as having an Emotional and physical toll on individuals and families. In a 2006 study of over 300 chronic pain sufferers – 2/3 reported pain impacted their overall enjoyment of life, more than ¾ of patients reported feeling depressed, and 86 % reported an inability to sleep well. All of these factors compound on poor health. Healthy Living with Chronic Pain is here to help!

Testimony It helped me to realize that circumstances cannot always be chosen, but reactions to them can be…. I got as much out of this 6-week workshop as I got out of the 18 months I was in a pain-management group…. I focus on what I CAN do and not as much on what I CAN’T…. I feel more in-control of my health and do not feel alone in my management journey….
