1 Climates and Vegetation
5 major types: Tropical, Dry, Temperate Marine, Temperate Continental, and Polar

2 Tropical Climates 2 main types: tropical wet which has year long rain, most common to a rain forest Second is a tropical dry: which still has a good amount of rain but not nearly like a rain forest

3

4 Dry Climates Have very hot summers and mild winters
Get very little rain Little or no vegetation What does grow there need very little if any water to live

5 Temperate Marine Found near coast lines mostly
Three types: mediterranean, marine west coast, and humid sub tropical Humid sub tropical and marine west coast get plenty of rain, all have very mild winters and quite warm summers

6

7 Temperate Continental
Summers are hot winters very cold? Who does that sound like??? Supports grass lands, and forests

8

9 Polar Climates Cold all year
Made up of Tundra or areas of very cold climates and low-lying vegetation Some areas are so cold nothing can grow

10

11 Earth’s Vegetation Regions
Vegetation depends on climates and the earth is divided up into 11 main vegetation regions Remember what a region is ??????

12 Tropical Rain forest Loaded full of sun light rain and heat causes so many things to grow Forms a canopy of growth or dense leafy layer of trees and bushes in the upper most part of rain forest

13

14 Tropical Savanna A savanna is a park like landscape of grass lands with scattered trees Winters are much more dry then summers

15

16 Desert Driest parts of desert have no vegetation
Some plants that do grow need little water to surivive

17

18 Desert Scrub Has a little more rain then the desert itself
Kind of on outskirts of desert Small bushes and trees are scattered around

19

20 Mediterranean Vegetation
Grasses, shrubs, low trees, etc… These plants hold water a long time so when it does rain they keep it for a long time

21

22 Temperate Grass lands Large grass lands
Some very wet grass lands also called swampy areas Can also be called a prairie

23

24 Deciduous Forest Marine west coast climate
Filled with trees that all lose their leaves in the fall

25

26 Coniferous Forest Same type of climate, Cool winters hot summers
Filled with many trees that support cones to carry seeds

27

28 Tundra Cold climate Little if any low lying vegetation

29

30 Highlands Vegetation depends on elevation Higher you go less you see
Think of mountains or rolling hills

31

32 Ice Cap Thick ice caps or packed ice No vegetation

33

34 Vertical climate zones
The higher you go up the colder it gets why??? As elevation rises temperature becomes cooler Firstly, the sun is about 93 million miles away from the earth so going up a mile or so isn't going to make much difference Now most of the heat from the sun passes right through the air without doing anything, it really heats the ground and the oceans, forming a heat reservoir underneath us which is really where we get most of our heat from. As you ascend, you're getting further away from that, which means the heat is being used up more to heat the air below you an there isn't much left to heat the air at high altitudes, hence it is colder the higher you go.
