1 Options for revising the reporting of pressures and threats
Review Art.17/12 Options for revising the reporting of pressures and threats

2 Pressures and threats – why are they important?
Link to the assessment status of Structures and functions of habitat (they should only be Favourable if there are no significant deteriorations/pressures) can also help to assess the Habitat for the species feed into the assessment of Future prospects Feed into EU analysis they provide information on main drivers related to results of the status assessment they can help to identify actions

3 Key issues related to pressures and threats
List of pressures is a mixture of drivers and impacts overlapping pressure codes (A04.03 Abandonment of pastoral systems, lack of grazing & K02 Biocenotic evolution, succession ) problems when analysing pressure information arising from mixture of drivers (D01.02 Roads, motorways ) and impacts (J02.05 Modification of hydrographic functioning)

4 Key issues related to pressures and threats
Level 2 pressures do not allow a meaningful analysis of the results in analysis it is important to identify policy relevant drivers some pressures are very broad (B02 Forest and Plantation management & use ) some pressures mix contradicting level 3 pressures (A04 Grazing ) Reporting at different hierarchical levels - comparability ‘dilution effect ‘

5 Key issues related to pressures and threats
The pressure categories should cover similar variation some categories are very specific (I Invasive, other problematic species and genes) while others are very broad (J Natural System modifications) More harmonisation is needed with WFD and MSFD linked to broader initiative of coordinated implementation of interlinked policies under the Nature Directives, WFD and MSFD Missing guidance/interpretation of pressures Some important pressures were missing problems indicated in the MS questionnaire

6 Options for review of pressures & threats reporting
List of pressures The revision of the list of pressures is needed. The list should include as far as possible only activities. Pressures which are impacts or consequences of activities listed in other sections of the list should not be included.

7 Options for review of pressures & threats reporting
Impact of reported pressures Information on impacts could be provided separately for each reported pressure using the following categories: 1 = habitat loss 2 = habitat degradation 3 = indirect effect on habitat 4 = species mortality 5 = species disturbance 6 = indirect species effect

8 Options for review of pressures & threats reporting
Level of detail for reporting The question of mandatory level of reporting should be re- considered. Level 3 pressures can be linked more easily to main policy relevant drivers and subsequently used for communicating results. Many Member States used level 3 (or lower) pressures in their reports Using level 3 pressure will require further work on pressure list and guidance Level 4 pressures Level 4 pressures should be removed from the list

9 Discussion Discussion points:
Revising the list of pressures (Should we try to revise the pressure list to make it as far as possible activity oriented? What are other criteria to consider when revising the list? Which are the most problematic level 1 categories?) Impact of reported pressures (Do we need the information on the impact of pressures at the EU level? Is it useful when considering the additional reporting burden?) Level of detail for reporting (Can we agree on reporting using the level 3 pressures? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Level 4 pressures (Can we agree on removing level 4 pressures from the list?)
