2 Tragedy: An imitation of a serious action, which will arouse pity and fear in the viewer

3 Tragic hero A character, usually of high or noble birth, neither totally good nor totally evil, whose downfall is brought about by some weakness or error in judgment.

4 Hamartia The tragic flaw, weakness of character or error in judgment, which causes the downfall of the hero.

5 Hubris: A specific tragic flaw that demonstrates arrogance or overweening pride which causes the hero’s transgression against the gods; usually the tragic flaw

6 Anagnorosis: A recognition or discovery on the part of the hero; change from ignorance to knowledge

7 The reversal of fortune

8 The tragic hero’s fate that cannot be escaped
Nemesis: The tragic hero’s fate that cannot be escaped

9 Catharsis: purgation of emotions of pity and fear, which leaves the viewer both relieved and elated

10 Pathos: The identification with the tragic hero; empathy (pity and fear) that is purged during catharsis
