1 Welcome in Ispra ! 2010 Fall TFMM workshop

2 TFMM Work plan for 2010 Build-up the appropriate framework for the implementation of the revised monitoring strategy Technical support to the Parties ; workshop to be organised Expert panel devoted to the use of satellite and remote sensing data : CCC, national experts, TFHTAP, ESA (OK), ECMWF (OK), DLR (OK), Météo France (OK), research community Analyse and promote the last EMEP field campaigns on PM; highlight gaps and priorities for future experiments (now for 2011) Design and launch 1-2 case studies on heavy metals in voluntary countries to enhance dialogue between emission, modelling and measurement communities Conceive a “Eurodelta-like” exercise fit to the needs of IAM Contribute as far as possible to on-going modelling activities

3 The workshop agenda Session 1 : future modelling activities
Session 2 : test case studies Session 3 : future field campaigns Agreement on concrete objectives for the TFMM for the upcoming 2-3 years Intermediate results to be presented at the next EMEP Steering Body meeting

4 TFMM modelling activities
Interest of the Parties to develop this part of our mandate and to participate to concrete actions Interest for national capacity building : through exchange of experience, elaboration of an appropriate modelling frameworks fit for policy purposes The EMEP centers need to assess their tools, organize their developments and improve the whole system Close cooperation necessary with other on-going modelling initiatives : FAIRMODE, AQMEII, EC4MACS, GMES/MACC

5 From the questionnaire:
Country Models used Possible contribution Remarks Slovakia (SMHU) CAMx, EMEP for assessment of transboundary pollution Centralised capacity Volunteer but no resources. Partial contribution on focussed topics; win/win situation if it improves their skills No project for the urban scale : too expensive in data and resources Priorities for TFMM : Uncertainties, guidances Finland (FMI) National models (SILAM, Hilatar) Centralised capacity Contribution possible to support their own LRT-AQ codes Model evaluation, uncertainty on the parametrisations Germany (UBA) National : REM/CALGRID + EURAD + LOTOS/EUROS, MUSCAT Centralised and decentralised Interest but funding problems from the national authorities Real consistency with national activities for building confidence in models Model evaluation, uncertainty Large interest for the urban scale in GAINS Switzerland (PSI) CTM run at Psi on behalf of the Federal Office YES Look for information exchange, especially on emissions Expect more involvement in the TFMM activities Focussed on EMEP field campaign periods for intercomparison exercises Croatia (EKONERG) EMEP model run at the national level . Centralised at (EKONERG) Look for the creation of an operational framework in Croatia. It would be a good stepping stone for building national capacities

6 Czech Republic Interest but no real capacities Competent people are now retired and the activity has not been real taken over. UK CTM run by decentralised organisation but IAM is centralised Interest but no specific funding Priorities for TFMM : Uncertainty assessment, source apportionment, scientific issues e.g non-linearity Note that the UK has its own capacity for the city-Scale which is note City-Delta Spain (MARM) CTM run by several national organisations (CIEMAT, weather services...+ research groups): CHIMERE, CMAQ, MOCAGE YES: funding is possible through national agreements Wants to test their own development and to get further feedback on the Mediterranean situation+ assessment of the EMEP model Priorities for TFMM : Uncertainty, scientific issues e.g Mediterranean features and aerosol issues

7 Emphasis put on : Uncertainties and model evaluation : PM especially
Urban scale : how to improve the regional model responses at this scale Use of new set of data : observations, emissions, land cover… Take benefits from the know how built up in previous experiments (EURODELTA) Which TFMM contribution to other modelling initiatives? Which TFMM project to fulfil the needs of the EMEP strategy and the expectations of the parties
