1 There are three main types of clauses.
Main Clauses: These are a full sentences which make sense on their own. e.g. The girl sang her song. The boys played until it went dark. The cakes look delicious. Subordinate Clauses These are parts of a sentence which don’t make sense on their own – they are ‘less important’. Subordinate clauses begin with a subordinating conjunction. e.g. …..while Amy was eating. Since he was five years old…. …until the light fades………. Relative Clauses This is a type of subordinate clause to give extra information about a noun. They begin with a relative pronoun (who, which, whose, that). e.g. The Highwayman, who wore breeches of brown doe skin, was feared. The pupil, whose name was Joe, was in Year 6. The dog, that barked, was big.
