Convocation Lecture Series: “EFFECTIVE PRAYER” Rev. Dr. Jeffrey A. Moore, Guest Speaker & Teacher

2 1 Timothy 2:8

3 GIVING GOD A REASON Principle: A correct basis for our asking gives God a reason for answering our prayer. How to apply: Ask yourself, Why should God answer this prayer request? Then give God a reason to answer.

4 REASONS GOD ANSWERS PRAYER
1.  The prayer acknowledges God’s – ·     Honor – God’s good name, integrity; ·    Character – qualities of God; ·    Glory – outshining of God’s attributes; 2.  The prayer is supported by the intercession of Jesus through His priesthood. 3.   The prayer is supported by the intercession of the Holy Spirit. 4.   The prayer comes from one who is related to God and Christ. ·

5 WHAT IS PRAYER??? · Prayer is intimate communication with God.
·    Petition – Make known our request ·    Supplication – Understanding that God is our Supplier WORD STUDY ·    Hebrew - tephillah – prayer; intercession, supplication ·

6 · God always answers prayer.
ELEMENTS OF PRAYER 1.  What I say to God. 2.    What God says to me. · God always answers prayer.

7 Twenty guidelines for effective prayer

8 Persevere in prayer (Luke 18:1)
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint”

9 Pray with confidence (Heb. 4:16)
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

10 Resist the Devil (James 4:7)
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

11 Allow God to Work (Psalm 37:5)
“Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him and He will bring it to pass.”

12 Pray specifically (Phil. 4:19; 4:6)
“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus”; “Be careful for nothing; but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.”

13 Pray in Jesus’ Name (John 4:13-14)
“And I will do whatever you ask in My Name so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My Name and I will do it.”

14 Pray in Faith (Mark 11:22-24) “And Jesus answering saith unto them Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

15 Pray according to God’s promises (2 Cor. 1:20)
“For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”

16 Don’t try to dictate to God (Isa 55:8-9)
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

17 God is Almighty (Eph. 1:19-21)
“And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, Which He wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.”

18 Pray according to God’s Will (1 John 5:14-15)
“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His Will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have what we asked of Him.”

19 Pray with expectation (Jer. 33:3)
“Call to Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

20 Praise and thank God for answers (Psalm 100:1-2)
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing.”

21 Obey God and live a Holy Life (1 John 3:21-22)
“Beloved, if our hearts condemn us not, then have we confidence before God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”

22 Confess and break with all conscious and unconfessed sin (Prov
He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. .”

23 Pray fervently and earnestly (James 5:16)
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

24 Pray from your position of authority in Christ (Ephesians 2:6)
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

25 Saturate your prayers in praise and worship (Romans 11:33-36)
“ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. .”

26 Wait upon the Lord so that He can answer you (Isa 40:31; Psalm 145:15)
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.

27 Be honest with God in your prayers; do not try to hide things or misrepresent things to God (Psalm 139:23-24) “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting
