Legislation Cost – Environmentalist spent approx. 56 million dollars in the last four years in lobby fees attempting to en-act laws consistent with their issues. Congress has spent in excess of 10 million dollars to provide for increases in the Interior Departments budget for firefighting/fire protection. This resulted in an increase of 2.9 billion dollars for the level of effort deemed necessary, also to include 760 million dollars for forest management.
2003 – Calif. July- Nov. – 577million acres, 3,000 structures, 15 lives, $104 million to fight
2002 – 6,937,584 acres, 88,458 separate fires
2001 – 3,555,138 acres, 731 structures, $532 million to fight, 84,079 separate fires
2000 – 8.5 million acres, $1.3 billion, and more than 30,000 people to combat, 123,000 separate fires
