1 Classification OF matter
By: Mrs. “My sister is having a girl!!” Burge

2 Matter Matter- anything that takes up space (and displays the properties of mass and inertia) What is the smallest component of matter? atom Composition- parts of a sample and their relative proportions

3 Physical Properties Physical Properties- an aspect of matter that can be observed or measured without changing it Examples: Density Color Conductivity (ability for electricity to flow through) Malleability (can it be flattened?) Molecular weight and volume

4 Chemical Properties Chemical Property- any characteristic that can only be observed by changing the chemical identity of the substance Examples: Reactivity Flammability (how well does it catch on fire?) Oxidation (Will it react with oxygen (rust))

5 Substances Substance- a type of matter with a fixed composition
It can be an element or a compound

6 Element Element- a substance made up of atoms that are all alike
One type of atom Examples: Graphite in your pencil Lithium in all your electronic batteries Platinum in cars

7 Compound Compound- a substance where atoms of 2 or more elements are (chemically) combined in a fixed composition If separated it becomes a different substance Cannot physically be separated We can’t use heat or strainers to separate Examples: Water (hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a 2 to 1 ratio) Salt (sodium and chloride in a 1 to 1 ratio)

8 Mixture Mixture- composed of 2 or more substances that can be separated by physical means Examples- Cotton blend shirts Milk Salad dressing Air White gold

9 Mixtures There are 2 types of mixtures: Heterogeneous Homogeneous
What’s the difference?

10 Heterogeneous Mixture
Heterogeneous Mixture-a mixture where different materials remain distinct Salad dressing (settles when it is allowed to just sit) Salads (you can pick out different veggies) Jello with fruit in it Any mixture that isn’t the same throughout

11 Heterogeneous Mixture
Suspensions- a heterogeneous mixture made of a liquid and a solid that will settle (separate) River deltas Salad dressing Pulp in fruit juice

12 Heterogeneous Mixture
Colloids- a heterogeneous mixture with particles that never settle Pasteurized milk Fog Smoke

13 Homogeneous Mixture Homogeneous Mixture- a mixture that remains constantly and uniformly mixed and has particle that are so small they cannot be seen (with our eyes or low powered microscopes) They will never settle Every part is the same Examples: Pop Gasoline Steel Jello without fruit

14 Homogeneous Mixture Solution- same thing as a homogeneous mixture
Made of 2 parts: Solute- the smaller amount of a solution (what is being put into the solvent) Salt, sugar, nitrogen Solvent- the larger amount of a solution (what something is being added to) Many times is water Oxygen, milk

15 Saturation Saturation- the state that occurs when no more of something can be absorbed, combined with or added Unsaturated- the state when more of something can be absorbed, combined with or added Super Saturated- a state of solution that contains too much solute than the solvent can dissolve, absorb or combine with
