3 Advantages and Challenges of this design
Reuse of existing and proven solutions reduces uncertainties in planning the project. Helps reaching results efficiently, with limited resources. Liberates resources for the PS detector work, where more attention is clearly needed now. A mature design, with details well understood , helps in optimisation (e.g. for minimizing mass, reducing costs). Challenges: In order to fit in the Wheel the Rods can have only a limited thickness + width The space for the modules and services in the Rod is therefore limited. A major constraint to the module design, including service components (DC-DC, optolink) Need to design and build stiff, stable, and geometrically precise Rods. Efficient and reliable (!) cooling for every module. One of the current TOB cooling circuits has a big leak, and must be off. We have no idea where that leak is. To reach the needed geometrical precision in the Wheel, high-quality tooling and careful assembly work are mandatory. Access to the Modules and Rods in the assembled Wheel is close to impossible. 4 Today status of the Upgrade-TOB design
First studies done on Module + Rod integration Seems doable, but with very tight clearances (like in the original TOB…). Module positioning concepts and precision. Thermal contacts between Modules and cooling pipe Mechanical properties of adhesives used in cooling pipe contacts. Adaptors for holding 2S modules on existing spare TOB rods. These studies were done in mid In the past 6 months design efforts concentrated in 2S and PS module designs, no work done recently on the Upgrade-TOB. 5 Next tasks Update the Rod 3D models with the current version of the 2S module Prepare a 3D model of the Upgrade-TOB Wheel Study the cooling pipework, including manifolding and connections. Re-study and improve the Module supports geometry for thermal performance. A CERN designer, Jordan Degrange, is starting now at 20% level to support the CMS TK Upgrade project, with the Upgrade-TOB 3D modelling as the first task.
