2 The DAISY Award is an international program developed to recognize registered nurses for their exceptional care. It is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. Patrick’s family was so appreciative by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who care for him, so they created this international award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.   What is the daisy foundation? (n.d.)

3 The DAISY Award Today The program was started in 1999 and since then there are over 2,700 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and 17 other countries, committed to honoring nurses with The DAISY Award. The strategic impact of the program on nurses and their organizations is very effective by affecting nurses' job satisfaction, retention, teamwork, pride, organizational culture, healthy work environment, and so much more. What is the daisy foundation? (n.d.)

5 My letter to the Editor Have you ever encountered exceptional nursing care and wanted to do more than say thank you? Nurses can be recognized for the giving of extraordinary care by an international program called the DAISY Award created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 of an autoimmune disease. Patrick's family were incredibly grateful for all the skillful and compassionate care given by nurses and created a recognition program to honor nurses. Nurses are the patient advocate and through best evidence research initiate positive change for both the patient and healthcare. Expertise and advanced education are so important in the nursing profession as well as the compassionate direct patient care provided by the nurses. Sentara RMH participates in the DAISY Award program. Forms are available for nominations in the facility and at sentara.com/srmhdaisynomination. The DAISY Award is for extraordinary nurses! Nominate a nurse today!
