SI Leader Training Module 2: SI Etiquette, Office Policies, & Job Safety
2
Greetings, The following content is pulled from our SI Leader Online Training Module #2: SI Etiquette, Office Policies, & Job Safety. We created the module utilizing SoftChalk Create. Unfortunately, without access to SoftChalk Cloud services, we were not able to easily share the module directly so we converted the content to a ppt format instead. The links and activity boxes will not work with this format but hopefully this will still give you an idea of the content, learner check points, and overall purpose for our online training. Please don’t hesitate to give me a call if you have any questions. Tiffany Sullivan Assistant Director SI Program - UTSA (210)

Getting Started! The following training module will provide you with important information about SI Program policies on SI: etiquette (in the office, sessions, and class), computer and copier expectations, job safety, compliance training, and dress code. This training must be successfully completed with 100% accuracy to successfully complete this portion of your training. Final Assessment: After reviewing all of the module material, you will need to take the final assessment (last page). A score of 100 is required to pass this module, but no worries, you get unlimited chances to take this test.
5
Learning Objectives Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate office, session, & SI class etiquette. Identify proper SI computer and copier policies. Recall SI protocols for job safety. Recognize the importance of compliance training. Develop an understanding of the SI dress code.
6
Instructions Complete the following module and activities.
When complete, take the final quiz at the end of this training session. Successful completion of all 5 activity Checkpoints(orange activity boxes w/videos) and 19 quiz questions(at the end of this module) are needed to pass this component of your training. If you do not have a final score of 24 points, then you will need to complete any missed activities and/or correct any wrong answers until all 24 points are achieved. You have unlimited chances to correct missed answers

SI Etiquette: Communication
8
SI Etiquette: Communication
As an SI Leader you are to model appropriate behavior at all times when representing SI. The following expectations are in place to foster a professional, productive, and enjoyable work environment for everyone.
9
Inappropriate Conversations
Inappropriate conversations will not be tolerated and include but are not limited to: providing explicit details about your weekend activities, dates, parties, or gossiping about coworkers, faculty, and students. The use of curse words are not allowed. SI leaders are to maintain their professionalism at all times when representing SI.
10
Is this safe for me to say?
A good question to ask yourself is whether or not you would want your conversation publicized on the front page of the paper, uploaded to YouTube for the whole world to see, or even posted to your Facebook page for your family and future employers to see? If the answer is no, then it's probably not appropriate in SI. Activity: Video + Quiz Me (Next Slide)
11
Quiz Me Question Out of all the inappropriate behaviors listed below, select the ones observed in this video. Select all that apply. Don't forget to check your answers by selecting the "Check Answer" tab. If you answer incorrectly, redo until correct, then select "Check Answer" again. [mark all correct answers] Use of bad language (ie. cursing-even though it was bleeped out). Gossiping Providing too much explicit information about one's weekend activities that are NOT appropriate for the workplace (ex. details about last weekend's party). Disagreeing with the SI professor's grading system and lecture style.
12
SI Etiquette: SI Office Table & Workroom
13
SI Etiquette: SI Office Table & Workroom
To ensure that you have adequate space to work with students in your office hour, we ask that the front table be used only by leaders during their office hours. If you are in the SI office and would like to work on your session plans or other SI materials, feel free to use the leader work room. The leader workroom is designed for SI leaders only. If you are working with a student, you must use the office hour table. Keep the office and computer area clean! Be considerate of others and toss your trash in the trash cans outside the office. Activity: Video + Quiz Me (Next Slide)
14
Quiz Me Question Place the appropriate behaviors in the correct order in which they occurred in the video by dragging them from the bottom to top. SI Leader Signs in to his office hour and grabs a lanyard ( This one is first ) Although frustrated with his classes, the leader says "this isn't the place to talk about it" The leader who is NOT in his office hour remembers that the table is for office hours only
15
SI Etiquette: Session Rooms, Laptop Use, & Sick Days
16
SI Etiquette: Session Rooms
Session rooms are an important resource so we ask that you help us keep them clean and looking their best. Remember to wipe down the walls (have your students help you too). Toss any trash. End your session on time to allow the next leader time to set up their session (write their goals and study skills on the wall, etc.). Activity: Video + Quiz Me (Next Slide)
17
Quiz Me Question Match the items.
The task is to match the lettered items with the correct numbered items. Appearing below is a list of lettered items. Following that is a list of numbered items. Each numbered item is followed by a drop-down. Select the letter in the drop down that best matches the numbered item with the lettered alternatives. a. Appropriate: The leader inside the room ends their session on time and the SI leader outside the room patiently waits for the SI session. b. Appropriate: The SI Leader outside the room waits until the session is finished and students leave before entering the room. Inappropriate: The leader inside the room is running over the 50 minute allotted session time. The impatient SI leader waiting outside the room makes rude gestures to hurry the leader inside the room. A or B 2. Inappropriate: The impatient and agitated SI Leader enters the room and rudely rushes the leader out of the room.
18
SI Etiquette: Laptop Use In SI Class
Students will be watching what you do so it's important to maintain your studious image at all times. In class, we ask that you refrain from using a laptop to take notes. If you must use a laptop to take notes, make sure to ask the professor permission first and let your team supervisor know. Under NO circumstance do you check Facebook, surf the net, check your , etc. while on your laptop in the SI Class. Stick with typing notes only!
19
SI Etiquette: Sick Days
We'll share a lot of things this semester: creative session strategies, tips on marketing sessions, and many other ideas. We do not want to share germs or viruses. Please be respectful to your co-workers and students. If you are contagious, you will be asked to leave. If you are sick, notify your team leader, seek medical care, stay home and take care of yourself! Stay well but if you are not then seek medical care and stay home!
20
SI Program Computer Policy & Copier Policy
21
SI Program Computer Policy
Conducting non-SI business related activities in the office can interfere with the day to day operations of the SI Program and achievement of our goals. Please be considerate of your fellow SI Leaders and their need to get SI work done when in the office
22
SI Program Computer Policy
SI has priority over personal work. The computers in the SI office are designated for SI leaders only and SI related business. It's ok to check your personal and Facebook; however, SI business will have priority. It is up to you to be proactive and ask leaders if they need the computer to work on SI materials. A rule of thumb to remember is that if your non-SI activities are costing the program money, then it's not allowed.
23
SI Program Computer Policy
Save your work on a flash drive There is no guarantee that the computer you were working on will be available next time you come in so it's a good idea to save your work on your flash drive. This way you'll have it with you in case you need to access your work later
24
SI Program Computer Policy
Logging out For security reasons, make sure to log out of any personal accounts such as Blackboard and before you leave. Activity: Video + Quiz (Next Slide)
25
Quiz Me Question When using a computer in the SI Office, it is the responsibility of the SI Leader using the computer to proactively ask other SI Leaders if they need the workstation for SI related work. True False
26
SI Program Copier Policy & Use
All SI resources are to be used for TRC/SI business only. Copies or Printing Allowed: SI handouts SI class notes Timecards SI paperwork/sign in sheets/session plans Not Allowed: Printing or copying anything non-SI related! Activity: Video + Quiz (Next Slide)
27
Quiz Me Question The leader in this video is using SI resources to make copies of SI related materials. True False
28
Office Refrigerator Use Policy
29
Office Refrigerator Use Policy
You are welcome to store cold items in the SI refrigerator; however, a few rules apply to help us use the space wisely. Label all your items with your name. To maximize usable space, please refrigerate only items that need to be kept cold in the refrigerator. If you spill something in the fridge, please wipe it up as you notice the spill. We need to work together to keep the fridge clean and usable! Please remove all your items by Friday at 2pm each week to avoid the loss of any personal items. Every Friday, the refrigerator will be cleaned out. This will help our refrigerator stay clean and usable. All items left in the fridge will be thrown out (including containers).

Job Safety: Fire Drills & Evacuations
UTSA PD’s Number
31
Job Safety: Fire Drills & Evacuations
Be aware of your surroundings Nothing is more important than your safety. If you find yourself in a situation where you feel unsafe, leave and call for help. Do NOT put yourself in danger. If you are on campus, call the UTSA campus police at They will be able to get to you faster. Take a minute to program the UTSA Police Department's emergency number: in your cell phone!
32
Job Safety: Fire Drills & Evacuations
You are in the SI office or JPL session room and hear the fire alarm. What do you do? Where do you go? Step 1: First things first!
33
Job Safety: Fire Drills & Evacuations
Step 2: Depending on where you are, exit the nearest evacuation point. If you are in a SI session, your job is to tell your students to evacuate to the nearest exit. If they refuse to leave, do not stay to try to convince them. Your safety comes first!

SI Program Dress Code
38
SI Program Dress Code As model students SI leaders should dress in a manner that reflects your status as a university student and is appropriate for the classroom environment. For the most part, SI leaders dress as they would on any typical day spent on campus taking classes and interacting with faculty. However, it is important to understand that as model students, SI leaders are the academic leaders on campus. Maintaining an effective image of leadership and creating a comfortable learning environment for all our students does require mindfulness in both dress and manner
39
SI Program Dress Code Clothing with obscene, sexually suggestive, profane graphics and/or messages as well as references to drug or alcohol use should not be worn while fulfilling SI leader responsibilities on campus.
40
SI Program Dress Code While attending class, facilitating SI sessions, holding office hours or attending SI leader trainings, SI leaders are expected to avoid wearing clothing that is unprofessionally revealing such as low-cut tank tops/muscle shirts, halter tops or short cropped tops that expose areas ranging from the chest through abdominal and back muscle groups of the diagram below.
41
SI Program Dress Code While working in the SI leader role:
Do not wear shorts that expose any portion of the gluteus maximus muscle or the area where the gluteus maximus muscle meets the hamstring muscles of the diagram on the next slide. Low rise pants or shorts that expose areas where back muscles meet the gluteus maximus muscle should not be worn. Underwear should not be visible and footwear must be worn while fulfilling SI leader duties.
42
SI Program Dress Code If you have any questions or concerns about an article of clothing please see your supervisor for guidance. SI leaders found in violation of this policy will be asked to wear a UTSA t- shirt or stylish lab coat while fulfilling SI duties for the day

Inappropriate topics for conversation when representing SI include:
All of the above are good ways to save your work If you are using a computer in the SI workroom for Non-SI related purposes and you see another leader waiting to use the computer, you should: Sharing details about the party you went to Saturday night The refrigerator is cleaned out Every Monday at 2pm How much you dislike the professor for your any of your classes Every Friday at 2pm Avoid eye contact, ignore them and continue working on your homework Every other Friday at 2pm Criticizing another SI leader or staff member Every Friday at 4 Be proactive: Ask them if they need a computer, then offer them the computer you are using All of the above It's okay to occasionally drop the "F" bomb or any other curse word when conversing with your peers in the office. If you are in the SI office, but not holding your office hour, where is an appropriate space for you to work? Wait until they ask if they can use the computer that you are on True None of the above False The table in the back of the office The table in the front of the office designated for office hours only Which of these is NOT a step to remember when using the SI copier? You should make sure to end your session on time and leave the room and walls clean for the next leader. The leader work room Log in using your copy code for both the "Dept. ID" and "PIN" Either A or C Select the "2-sided" copy setting when copying multiple pages If you are sick with a fever or something contagious you should: Log off the copier when you are done making your copies It's ok to use your laptop in your SI class to take notes WITHOUT asking the professor's permission. Stay home and get well Replace any paper you've used in the copier's paper tray Tough it out and come to work/school anyway What is the best way to make sure any work you've done on the computer doesn't get lost? Try to hold your sessions while wearing a mask, so you don't spread anything Save it to the computer's desktop Ask your roommate's opinion on whether or not you should come to work/school Leave it open on the computer, but minimize it Save your work to a flash drive

17.As a representative of UTSA, the TRC, and the SI program you are expected to avoid wearing inappropriate clothing while working in the role of SI leader. 11. It's ok to use the SI copier to print a few pages for your personal (non-SI) class. True False 12. You can invite a friend to come use a computer in the SI office as long as you are with them. 18.Which of the following is an example of acceptable clothing while operating in your SI leader role? low-cut tank tops/muscle shirts, halter tops or short cropped tops that expose areas ranging from the chest through abdominal and back muscle groups. 13. It is okay to put your entire lunch bag in the refrigerator including the things that don't really need to be kept cold Clothing with obscene, sexually suggestive, profane graphics and/or messages as well as references to drug or alcohol use. Shorts that DO NOT expose any portion of the gluteus maximus muscle or the area where the gluteus maximus muscle meets the hamstring muscles. 14.In case of an emergency on campus, you should ALWAYS call UTSA's emergency number first at 19. Ryan only has 15 minutes to get to his session but realizes he needs to make copies of a really awesome handout his students made during the last session. Unfortunately, when Ryan gets to the SI leader workroom, he notices the copier line is backed up and does not have time to make his copies. At this point Ryan decides to go with his plan B activity he prepared ahead of time. 15.Compliance training is mandatory – if you do not complete this training upon request then it can impact your ability to hold sessions, attend class or secure future employment with the SI program. What should Ryan do to take to ensure he gets his copies done in time? Plan to visit the leader work room to make copies earlier that day, maybe even the day before just to be sure. 16.Maintaining an effective image of leadership and creating a comfortable learning environment for all our students does require mindfulness in both dress and manner. Announce that it's an emergency and cut in line. Cancel the session and scrap the plan because all hope is lost!
