Run, Hide or Fight Secondary Student Training Issaquah School District Winter 2016

2 BE PREPARED Schools are one of the safest places to be!
Just like we practice in case of fire or earthquake, we need to prepare in case there is an intruder who comes to our school to do harm.

3 BE PREPARED The most important thing to do is listen to your teacher and follow their directions. We also need you to know your options If there is an intruder in your building, your teacher may direct you to run or hide If alone, you may choose to run or hide or fight. If you are unable to run away from the intruder, you need to hide. As a last resort , it may be necessary to fight the intruder.

4 RUN Your teacher may ask you to RUN away from danger,
Listen and follow your teacher’s directions, Leave your belongings behind, Help others escape if possible, Use any safe, available exit that is going away from the threat. Teacher: Please take a moment to discuss how your students can get out of the room in an emergency.

5 HIDE Your teacher may need you to HIDE from the intruder.
Listen and follow your teacher’s directions. This is similar to a lockdown that you have practiced. Hide anywhere you can Silence your cell phone. Remain very quiet. This could happen anywhere on school grounds Teacher: “Look at room, what makes sense here?”

6 FIGHT Your teacher may try to protect you by fighting the intruder.
Listen and follow your teacher’s directions. Do not try to help unless your teacher gives you instructions to do so. Teacher: Avoid conflict by running or hiding if you can. I may not draw attention by talking to you. If the intruder can’t see you and hiding isn’t working, I may tell you to run.

7 REMEMBER Schools are one of the safest places you can be.
Your teachers and administrators are trained to protect you. Remain calm and follow instructions of staff and law enforcement.
