2 Drugs are chemicals which change the way your body works.
Medicines are legal drugs. Sometimes people take more than the prescribed dose of legal drugs or illegal drugs. Examples of illegal drugs are marijuana, ecstasy, cocain, LSD, crystal meth, and heroin. (Marijuana is generally an illegal drug, but some states allow doctors to recommend it to adults for certain illnesses.) Illegal drugs cause harm to people, especially children and teenagers. They damage the heart, the brain and other important organs. Cocaine can cause a heart attack for example.

3 What happens when you use illegal drugs?
You are less focused and can act irresponsibly and do dangerous things. You will perform less well at school. You can become addicted to drugs and your body will not function well without them. If you get addicted you start feeling very sick without drugs even if they are harmful. This is called a withdrawal symptom and it lasts until a person becomes drug free again.

4 How can you help others? Tell an adult that you trust.
Drug users might need professional help and medical treatment. Give a good example by not taking drugs yourself.
