U.S. Control of Puerto Rico
Treaty of Paris, that ended Spanish- American war, gave U.S. Control of Puerto Rico U.S. Soldiers landed in Puerto Rico in July Puerto Ricans resented U.S. military rule because soldiers did not treat the locals well. Foraker Act of 1900 ended military rule and set up a civilian government. U.S. Control Over Cuba U.S. forces occupied after Cuban independence

U.S. Influence on China By 1899 many nations created “spheres of influence” in China Secretary of State John Hay proposed an “Open Door Policy” for China. Chinese Ports to be opened to all nations and the country to maintain its independence. In 1900 a secret society started a rebellion against foreign dominance. Roosevelt’s Usage of American Power
Roosevelt became president after McKinley’s assassination in 1901 He used American Power to help settle Russo-Japanese War and won Nobel Peace Prize in 1905. He also used his influence and American power to build the Panama Canal. Taft’s Usage of U.S. Power
1911: Taft use Roosevelt Corollary to take over Nicaraguan railroads and banks for American businesses. American businesses also collected Nicaragua’s custom duties When Nicaraguans rebelled against American dominance Taft sent in troops. Missionary Diplomacy of Woodrow Wilson
U.S. wouldn’t recognize government’s that were oppressive, undemocratic or opposed to U.S. business interest. Wilson sent troops to Mexico to topple General Huerta’s government and helped Carranza to come to power New Rebellion by Francisco “Pancho” Villa & Emiliano Zapata Wilson Sent Troops to Mexico again & withdrew in 1917.
