Government:
Federalist: Strong central government
Did not trust the common person to know enough to make good decisions for the country.
Raise taxes to pay off national debt (Financial plan: national bank and bonds)
Loose Construction: If the Constitution does not forbid it, then I can do it.
Elastic clause: The government can do whatever is “necessary and proper” to govern.
Economy:
Wanted to grow different industries and businesses
High tariffs to protect American businesses
Democratic-Republican: weaker central government, stronger state governments.
He felt that everyone had a right to rule themselves (self-government).
Did not like the national bank: felt that it gave too much power to the central government.
Strict construction: If it’s not mentioned in the Constitution, I cannot do it. The government can only do the things that are mentioned in the Constitution.

Believed in farmers – independent and virtuous
