Triglycerides Definition
A triglyceride: is an ester derived from glycerol and three fatty acids (from tri- and glyceride). Triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in humans and other animals, as well as vegetable fat.

Triglycerides Structure
The main molecule that starts the structure of a triglyceride is glycerol. Glycerol is a three-carbon molecule with three hydroxyl groups on them. These hydroxyl groups are the site of an ester reaction with three fatty acid molecules. The fatty acids are long chains of carbons with bonded hydrogens.

Triglyceride test facts
Triglycerides are the main ingredient in vegetable oils and animal fats. The triglyceride test measures the level of triglycerides in the blood. Fasting for 9 to 12 hours before the triglyceride test is required.

Elevated triglyceride levels may be a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Highly elevated triglyceride levels may also cause fatty liver disease and pancreatitis. High triglyceride levels can also be associated with diabetes, kidney disease, and the use of some medications. Normal triglyceride levels in the blood are less than 150 mg per deciliter (mg/dL).

Causes high Triglyceride
A number of factors can raise triglycerides, or cause very high triglycerides. For example, it tends to be more common in people with: Low thyroid levels (hypothyroid) Poorly controlled diabetes Kidney disease A genetic predisposition where the body produces an excess amount of triglycerides

Other factors that can raise triglyceride levels include: Certain medicines, including some birth control pills, beta blockers, antipsychotics and corticosteroids . A diet that is high in carbohydrates, processed or sugary foods . Alcohol . Not exercising.
