1 Science 8 Grade Wide Project
SOLAR OVEN Science 8 Grade Wide Project

2 What is a Solar Oven? A device that harnesses sunlight as a source of heat for cooking foodstuffs.

3 How does it work Solar ovens use solar energy—light and heat emitted from the sun—to cook food. It is designed to absorb more heat than it releases.

4

5 Your Task: Build your own Solar Oven
Goal: Build a solar oven that heats a cup of water to boiling point (100 degrees Celsius).

6 BIG QUESTIONS What are the properties and behaviours of light ?
How can energy be transferred ?

7 Your Task: Build your Own Solar Oven
This is a Grade Wide Project. All Grade 8’s will be participating. Why are we doing this? The common project will allow students to apply the skills and knowledge they acquired during the academic year in the context of a single project. By the end of this project, students will have a good understanding of the science competencies and skills needed to be successful at the next grade level.

8 Where to start: Go to: https://sites.google.com/view/sasprojects
Select Grade 8 Solar Oven 2. Go to Overview to find out What needs to be built and tested. What needs to be submitted. What the project is out of. Go to Design Instructions to find out What can be used to build the solar oven What cannot be used to build the solar oven Go to Submit a Report to find the digital progress report students need to complete (sorted by teacher)

9 Task 1: Group Work. Initial Research and Sketches
Research at least 3 solar oven designs. In your search, you must include: (1) the link(s) where you found the design (2) a picture of the design, and (3) a written paragraph explaining what elements of the design you like. Provide a sketch of the solar oven you plan on constructing. You must include at least 2 views, label all important features, and make it neat. This sketch will serve as a blueprint for your first solar oven. Submit 1 page report explaining the advantages of the features you’ve included in your design. Please refer to the slide show below for details and examples regarding the initial research and sketches

10 Sample Slide Show

11 Example of a Sketch:

12 Task 2: Solar Oven Test #1 (Group Work)
Test your oven. a picture of: your group testing the solar oven along with a picture of the recorded temperature.

13 Task 3: Post-Lab Report of Protype #1 (Individual)
Go to Submit Reports and fill in a progress report form. Answer all questions concisely and accurately. Collaborate: on what you want to change in your solar oven to improve results. What is your reasoning for making the changes you are planning? Decide: Who will do what and when and where.

14 Task 4: Solar Oven Test #2 (Group Work)
Test your oven again with the changes you implemented. a picture of: your group testing the oven along with a picture of the recorded temperature.

15 Task 5: Post-Lab Report for Protype #2 (Individual)
Post-Lab Report for Prototype #2: Answer all questions concisely and accurately. Research more. Think about how specifically you can improve your oven and why.

16 Task 6: Solar Oven Final Test. Group
Test your oven again with the changes you implemented. a picture of your group testing the mud battery along with a picture of the recorded temperature.

17 Task 7: Final Report. Individually
Post-Lab Report for final protype: Go to Submit Reports and fill in a progress report form. Answer all questions concisely and accurately.

18 Task 8: Discuss Big Questions
Write a paragraph in response to each Big Question stated at the beginning of the project: What are the properties and behaviours of light? How can energy be transferred? final report.

19 Marks Distribution: 30 marks
5 marks - Initial Research and Sketches 3 marks – Post Lab reports (3 reports for a total of 9 marks) 5 marks – Solar Oven Test #1 and #2 (2 tests for a total of 10 marks). Must include photo submission. *5 marks - bonus performance mark – dependent on Solar Oven Final results 6 marks - Final Written Response (Task 8)

20 You should also know: Deadlines (TBA) for each task are firm.
Late submissions will not be accepted.
