2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Fidel Castro became communist leader of Cuba in 1959 Developed ties to Soviet Union in 1960 January 1961:The U.S.A cuts off relations with Cuba

3 Eisenhower plans an anti-communist revolution
Under President Kennedy, CIA trained anti-Castro Cubans April 1961:a U.S backed group of Cuban exiles invade Cuba in an attempt to overthrow Castro known as the Bay of Pigs Invasion Unsuccessful and further increases tensions

4 Castro announces that Cuba is taking certain measures that would be the equivalent to world war if America attacked (he attributes this to help from the Soviets in July 1962. August 1962: U.S senate is alerted to the fact that there is evidence of Soviet missile installations in Cuba

5 U-2 (Spy Plane) 14 October 1962: U-2 plane flying over Cuba discovers missile sights. Photographs are taken and sent back to U.S

6 A medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM), with medium range between 1,000 and 3,000 km1
An intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) with a range of Intermediate-range nuclear missiles are discovered on Oct 17th,1962

7 U.S. Naval Blockade Oct 21st, 1962 U.S. naval blockade
According to international law a blockade is an act of war, but the Kennedy administration did not think that the USSR would be provoked to attack by a mere blockade.

8 Khrushchev announces to remove all missiles from Cuba on Oct 28th, 1962
Khrushchev sends Kennedy another letter proposing to remove Soviet missiles if he publicly announces to never invade Cuba on Oct 26, 1962.

9 Nov 20th 1962: Planes were officially removed and returned to the U. S
Nov 20th 1962: Planes were officially removed and returned to the U.S.S.R U.S. privately agrees to remove missiles from Turkey, What??
