Europe After German unification in 1871, they were the strongest country in Europe. Countries began to fear the strength of their neighbors & they began to make secrete alliances with each other Why is making a secret alliance dangerous? Nationalist goals & disputes caused Europe to become very unstable This will be one of the major causes of World War I Germany became the strongest country in Europe after defeating the French who were the strongest on the Continent. Upsetting the balance of power Strong theme in Europe since the middle ages is Europe is highly competitive states/countries While the world was creating huge empires, trading and advancing civilization Europe in a relatively obscure and backwards society fought each other and they will continue even as they become the strongest countries in the world they would compete over resources around the world leading to the next Great War.
