Wanting to watch different TV programmes

3 10.2.7 Protestant beliefs about the authority of the Church
Grade C Explain the difference between Catholic and Protestant views on the authority of the Church Grade B Analyse why scripture, democracy and statements of faith are sources of authority for Protestants Grade A/A* Justify which source of authority you think is best for Christians

4 The Christian Family Like any family there have been disagreements among Christians over the years. Sadly, this has resulted in splits which have created the separate Churches you see in this family tree. How many names of Christian Churches do you already know? Anglican Churches – Churches that are in communion with the Church of England Nonconformist Churches – Protestant Christians separated from the Church of England

5 Luther versus The Pope In the 16th century these men had a disagreement about how important the Church is in helping us to find out about what Jesus wants us to do.

6 What do all Christians believe about Salvations?
Grade C Explain the difference between Catholic and Protestant views on the authority of the Church Questions: What do all Christians believe about Salvations? What do Catholics think? How do protestants think differently? All Christians believe that Jesus saves us from death and brings us to life. All Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God. Catholics believe that we can only really get help with this from the Magisterium because this is where we learn about Jesus and meet Him in the sacraments. The Magisterium is the authority for Catholics. Protestants (like Luther) disagree with this. They believe that the Church can only make suggestions but cannot save us. They look for authority (guidance), from 3 places….

7 The 3 Main Authorities for Protestants
Bible (Scripture) Democracy Statement of Faith

8 Add 1 fact to your book about the Bible
Protestants believe that as long as you have faith anyone can understand the Bible. Christians do not have to rely on the Church to make sense of the Bible for them. Some Protestants would go as far as to say that the Bible is the only guide that you need as a Christian Add 1 fact to your book about the Bible

9 Add 1 fact to your book about democracy
Protestants believe that the Church is a community of people who are all of equal value. They don’t believe that certain people should have more say than others. Only decisions agreed by all members of the Church can have authority For example the Methodist Church has an annual conference, where members vote to make decisions Add 1 fact to your book about democracy

10 Add 1 fact to your book about statements of faith
Statement of Faith Every Protestant Church has an agreed statement of faith that believers are expected to accept. One example of this is the Chalcedonian Definition which states that Jesus was 100% human and 100% God. Other examples are the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, which set out key Christian beliefs about things like the Trinity. Add 1 fact to your book about statements of faith

11 (d) “The Bible is the only authority a Christian needs”
i. Do you agree? Give three reasons for your answer. (3) Tip: You need to talk about protestant Christians. They think you can read the Bible yourself. That the Bible is the word of God going directly to you and it teaches you how Jesus lived giving you an example to follow. In a community you can decide for yourselves how the teachings fit in with your culture and how laws like the 10 commandments and ways to act to reach salvation can best be applied. ii. Give three reasons why someone would disagree with you. (3) Tip: Catholics would disagree to an extent because they believe you need the Magisterium too. Explain why here.
