The old, wrinkled woman smiled at her grand-baby.

Adjectives-Out-of-Order

Adjectives-Out-of-Order
Adjectives can add powerful details to a word painting, but too many of them strung together make a sentence sound like a young, inexperienced writer created it. For example, notice the amateur feel in this sentence: The large, powerful, metal steam shovel dug into the ground. The repeated adjectives sound ineffective. When professional authors feel a need to pack three adjectives onto an image, they use a technique called “adjectives out-of-order” and shift two of the adjectives after their normal location before the noun. Observe how a professional author might revise the amateur sentence: The metal steam shovel, large and powerful, dug into the ground.

Copy the definition. Adjectives out-of-order work like a spotlight, highlighting the shifted adjectives and creating the impact of an almost profound statement.
