1 Categories of Materials SYNTHETIC

2 SYNTHETIC. The term synthetic is used to describe materials that have been created by man via a scientific process. It is possible to mix materials or chemicals to create a new material. In some instances chemicals are mixed together to simulate or copy natural materials, ee leather look SYNTHETIC Material Elastane [Lycra] ABS Kevlar Polypropylene

3 Kevlar Produced from chemicals, and has a high resistant to flames and heat. Very strong, approximately FOUR times stronger than equivalent steel wire. Uses Performance tyres Flame proof clothing Bullet proof Vest

4 Property 1 Property 2 Property3 Property 4 KEVLAR PROPERTIES
Yn wrth-fflam ac yn gallu gwrthsefyll gwres uchel High resistance to flames and heat Property 2 High tensile strength [stretching] Property3 High resistance to impact Property 4 High resistance to abrasions

5 GORE-TEX [Performance material]
A PTFE based polymer material that is waterproof, windproof and breathable. The material has minute pores [holes] 20,000 times smaller than water droplets so water can’t penetrate the material. The pores are big enough for water vapour to escape [sweat] making the material breathable. Fabrics Outdoor activity clothes

6 Property 1 GORETEX PROPERTIES Property 2 Property 3
Waterproof - due to minute pores in the material which are much smaller than water droplets, water can’t penetrate the material. Property 2 Windproof – due to the layered construction wind cannot penetrate the material. Property 3 Breathable - The minute pores allow water vapour or sweat to escape through the material.

7 Elastane [Lycra] Fabrics
A composite of synthetic materials devised by DuPont in 1959 to create a modern fabric that revolutionised the textiles industry. Elastane is recognised as its brand name – Lycra or Spandex. Usually it can be mixed with wool, nylon or cotton. Fabrics USES Exercise clothing Cycling clothing Fastskin swimwear

8 Fastskin Fabrics

9 Property 1 ELASTANE PROPERTIES Property 2 Property 3
High Elasticity properties and is a material that can be stretched. Its possible to stretch the material up to 600% more than its original size before it will break. Property 2 A very light material. Property 3 Resists absorption of sweat or liquids

10 ACRYLIC Thermoplastic - available in many colours including clear
Car headlight cover Uses - Visors for crash helmets Sides to phone boxes instead of glass Protection screens in ice hockey stadiums Letters cut out of Acrylic for signs

11 ACRYLIC Properties Property 1 Property 2 Property 3
Good Impact resistant Property 2 Good chemical resistance Property 3 Scratches much easier than glass

12 ABS Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
Thermoplastic Polymer that is available in many colours. Uses Components for the Dyson Casings for computer equipment Casings for mobile phones

13 Property 1 ABS PROPERTY Property 2 Property 3 Property 4
ABS is a tough, rigid and durable thermoplastic. Property 2 Available in many colours and has a high quality finish Property 3 Can be shaped into complicated forms and shapes by injection moulding. Property 4 Can resist high impact.

14 Polypropylene Thermoplastic Polymer that is available in many different colours and transparent. Folders Ropes DVD cases Seat of school chairs

15 Polypropylene Properties Property 1
Cryfder tynnol uchel ac yn addas ar gyfer rhaffau Very high tensile strength [suitable for ropes] Property 2 Gwrthdsafiad da i gemegion ac oel. High resistance to chemicals Property 3 Very malleable, can be bent over and over without breaking. Suitable for creating natural hinges, folders or DVD cases.
