Naming Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds contain a positive ion (cation) and a negative ion (anion). The + is always written first in the formula. Type I contain metals that only have one ion. Example Na in ion form is always Na+1. Type II contain metals that have two or more cations. Example Cu can be Cu+1 or Cu+2.
3
Rules for naming ionic compounds
1. Cation is always named first and the anion second. 2. The simple cation takes its name from the periodic table. 3. A simple anion is named by taking the first part of the element name and adding ide to the ending. Example Cl is called chloride.
6
Polyatomic Ions Polyatomic ions are ions that have more than one atom.
The name of polyatomic ions must be memorized.
8
Type III binary compunds
Type III also known as covalent compounds are compounds that contain two nonmetals bonded together. 1. The 1st element is given its elemental name. 2. The 2nd element is named as though it were an anion. 3. Prefixes are used to denote the numbers of atoms present. 4. The prefix mono is never used for naming the first element.

Prefixes 1- mono 2- di 3- tri 4- tetra 5- penta 6- hexa 7- hepta
8- octa 9- nona 10- deca
