1 Uppsala University Goals, Visions and Novelties - Research - Education

2 Research Comprises research in basic and applied nuclear physics and Materials. Instrumentation, analysis and methodologies Applications: Medicine, Materials, Safety and Security in nuclear power technology

3 Research New research initiatives based on previously gained experiences. Research areas: Environmental sampling and radiation protection Nuclear fuel development Materials Back-end issues New analysis methodologies New Facilities

4 Strålande jord –Citizen science and more
Radioactive contents in biological samples gathered by Swedish school classes. Uptake and retention of radionuclides as function of e.g. geology, hydrology fungus species, forest type. Interdisciplinary: Physics, Geosciences and Biology.

5 Toward higher capability GET optimized for spatial resolution
Measuring Data

6 Amorphous alloys, ICEWATER, DCVD Project

7 EURAD European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste Management (EURAD)
Starting in 2019, if funded: 5 year EU-funded programme with 52 partners. UU leads work package on “Spent Fuel Characterisation and Evolution until Disposal” (SFC).

8 Multivariate analysis (MVA)
Can nuclear safeguards be strengthened by using MVA? Can MVA be used to augment detector performance? Can MVA be used for monitoring recycling of HLW?

9 Development of the Medley setup
To be used at the emerging neutron research facility NFS (Neutrons For Science) at GANIL (Caen, France) Main projects planned: FISHES (FISsion vs Hydrogen Elastic Scattering) LIONS (Light ION production Studies). An experiment on Carbon is already approved. Commissioning of the NFS neutron beam

10 NESSA (NEutron Source in uppSAla): a facility under development
Motivation Maintain and develop national competence in: nuclear physics neutron physics radiation physics radiation protection detection techniques neutron tomography radiation effects Envisaged parameters Neutron energy: 14 MeV Neutron yield: up to 1011 n/s Usable neutron flux: up to 109 n/cm2/s Beam spot size: up to ~50 cm Pulsing option: Yes Update on the project status Procurement of the neutron generator (NG): contract to be signed in December 2018 Design of the radiation protection using the MCNP code: ready on the concept level Planned availability for external users: from year 2020

11 BETTAN - a test bench for gamma tomography
Upgraded facility for testing tomographic strategies, detectors and data acquisition systems. 1 Ci Cs137 in tubes mimicking fuel rods Robotic arm for placing “fuel rods” in various fuel geometries 4 BGO detectors with tungsten collimators Fully automated operation

12 HI Kärnkraftteknik (KKI) – 2nd ed. (planned start ht-2019)
This time: two tracks Annat HI-program, ³2år KKI 3. året HI-examen kärnkraft-teknik HI eller CI-program i elektroteknik, ³2år i stort samläsning med KKI + kraftelektronik HI-examen elkraftteknik m. inriktning mot kärnkraft
